Pros

Cake day supervisors are all very nice and approachable but their job is to make u feel ok doing grunt work Customer service trainers are also a nice bunch of people who do their best with limited time Allowed to make decisions yourself on issues like compensation to members in grievance situations Volunteer Day

Cons

This is my 3rd call center job and easily the worst Calls can be as short as 30 seconds so thats a lot of "have a nice days and is there anything else i can help you withs" and are back to back throughout the day Training is 10 weeks but the scope of the job is so big that when you're on the floor, you'll be unprepared for a lot of calls. The single worst thing about the job is the auditing, you're "audited" for everything, how long you put people on hold, average handle time, what u do on the call, the number of calls you take etc but what kills you is customer feedback, there will be 1 maybe 2 customer audits a week, if the customer doesnt like their vision policy (and most policies are average at best) they will give the company and therefore you a low score and then your stats are terrible for the whole week regardless if you speak to 500 other members and they love you because they wont be asked for feedback. This one and done approach to reviews is terribly unfair. VSP constantly harps on about competitive pay, but for the complex job you do there, its below industry standard and you dont get fully vested until 6 years in, bonuses are lousy, barely a week's pay. Its also very hard to move out of customer service, you are encouraged to do so but in practice, unless you have great experience in another discipline, you wont move out of this department. The call center is going to become a 365 day a year center

Pros

Nice coworkers, vision care is interesting

Cons

I noticed some comments here... here is my take on it: The benefits are NOT better than working for the government... especially in regard to retirement!! The only better benefit is the vision benefits... but who needs three pairs of sunglasses a year? I would rather be paid better, and in relation to my abilities and the product I produce. I don't need a bunch of glasses gathering dust in my drawer. If you start in customer service expect to stay there for a very very long time, if not indefinitely. HR does not recognize competent, hard-working and dedicated employees. If you want a decent job there, don't expect to move up... you need to bring your experience from the outside, as can be seen throughout the company. If you think the onsite cafe and cake day is a perk: expect to gain at least 10 to 15 pounds while working there... this place not a healthy environment mentally of physically. The programs implemented to show a 'healthy work force' are implemented for public relations reasons. Find yourself a better job and get treated much better, especially if you work in the military-like customer service sector of the company. Pay is horrible.
