Pros

“Worklife” balance Everyone is nice and relaxed. No real pressure

Cons

If you are not in a college hire program like TLP and you take a dev job directly after college, your career will definitely suffer. I was hired directly as a developer after college, and was put on teams that didn’t really do any “real” work or have interesting projects. Meanwhile, friends that were hired on the same year and were in the TLP program were promoted quickly to senior. Your work will be meaningless. Few teams are doing complex work, and a roll of the dice to get on a good one. In my department, most managers didn’t know what was going on with most teams. Lack of accountability is insane. Most are coasting. Good if you are starting a family and maybe settling down. Really, really bad if you want to work hard and progress to achieve your fullest potential. I felt like I wasted years of my early career working hard for a company and managers that couldn’t give a crap. I’m progressing at a better company with the same amount of effort with more pay and recognition. Also, heard from more tenured employees that leadership, compensation, and direction have declined since Bogle left Vanguard, and has accelerated downhill post 2000s era, and I would concur. Early career devs beware. Plan to leave 1.5-2 years if you aren’t a senior by then.

Pros

- Life flexibility - Unbeatable 401k match (18% if you put 4% of your own money) - Leadership does the right thing for the crew 90% of the time - High amount of PTOs - People are always willing to help, even across teams/departments - The people I've met are genuinely good people, there were very few snakes

Cons

- Low base salary - Every career move I've made has been a mistake - Promotions are dependent on people who don't see any of your work - It takes 6 years to fully vest your 401k - Employees' performance and labor is taken for granted (unpaid on-call, weekend elevations, etc...) - There are no more perks to "unlock" after 6 years at Vanguard - No official documentation about anything technical, it's changing however - One bad rating will tank your career down at Vanguard forever - Managers always ask you to speak more, introverts are looked down upon - If a manager hates your guts for any reason, you are in deep trouble - I've been expected to work 50-60 hour weeks for no compensation (depends on the role you have) while most crew in tech work around 20 hours at best

Pros

Good amount of PTO. 18 days a year plus you can buy an additional week. Health insurance does include some infertility coverage

Cons

-Extremely hard to get holiday time off (due to “bid PTO days”). -There’s a bunch of kiss ups who’ll do anything to move up the corporate ladder. -Mid-level managers not properly trained. Had multiple and they never knew how to address my questions or problems I was handling. -Low pay. -High workload. Especially in Mass Affluent/Voyager space where they just treat you like a sweatshop and keep piling work on because it’s a shared “team model.” -They give same advice to all clients no matter their circumstances. Not very personalized to the client. State that they due holistic financial planning but it’s only investment management (by putting all clients into the same 4 index funds). -Technology systems are a pain. So outdated and old that is always crashing and having issues and causes problems for many clients every month. Always a headache. -Vanguard stubborn to make any changes because “that’s how it’s always been done.” -No way to ever get your feedback truly heard from leadership. Crew barometer always overlooked at in team huddles, or everyone was too nervous to speak up. -Misleading “work life balance”. Most work more than their “37.5 hours” a week due to how much work they will pile on you. -Lack of unity and communication amongst departments. Each department has their one thing they focus on, and they don’t know how to work well with other departments. Everyone is put into “boxes” and those boxes can never cross lines. -Extremely long wait times for when clients call in. Sometimes clients have to wait 2-3 hours till a rep answers. -False pride from senior leadership constantly boasting about how great things are when really everyone is stressed and burned out with little pay. -They know they can easily replace you at any moment and just hire more dumb college students. -Extrmely metric heavy in monitoring your performance. Feels like they are constantly breathing down your neck (I.e. How many calls are you taking, what’s your average talk time, average hold time, etc. they track you down to the second). -Simply stuck in their ways.
