      Interesting Work, Expanding Company, Scary Management

      Pros

      The company creates well received products and is growing, which is gratifying for anyone who cares about their work.

      Cons

      As others have mentioned, the company is subject to the whims of the owner, which means that certain decisions can be questionable or worse. However, the biggest con by far is the way that people are let go with no warning. This happens all the time. When coworkers disappear overnight, the mood gets quite grim until some time has passed. And then, just when the last sting has faded from memory a little bit, it happens again.

      Small enough to make a difference Some teams are nice and collaborative If wiling, you can learn a lot in a short time Extremely successful in the publishing industry

      Company with no leadership struggling to adjust to major changes in publishing industry

      Pros

      Most colleagues are great. Smart, skilled, and hard-working. Unfortunately, the original group of passionate editorial, sales, and marketing team has mostly been scared out or fired without reason in favor of the same cookie-cutter types who can deal with the micro-management.

      Cons

      No one who works here seems to enjoys it anymore. The mood in the Boston office is downright depressing and it doesn't seem much better for the field-based employees. Since the company is owned and operated by one person, nearly all decisions must get past him, so it's impossible to get the necessary resources to make the products, most of which are great, really take-off. Also, if you like working for a morally sound company with solid values, you won't enjoy working here. One "wrong" sideways glance at the President and you no longer have a job.
