Growing upwards while still digging themselves into a hole.

Pros

A lot of the people who work here and aren't in management are very intelligent and interesting people. The products are well-received, and the company has continued growth, which is certainly something to be proud of. It's also a great learning environment - lots of collaboration and interest in sharing knowledge within different departments.

Cons

As others have stated, the owner (who recently fired the President and took over, out of the clear blue) very much does whatever he wants. There are large portions of the business that he does not understand, and makes no effort to. He is stubborn and has blinders on. As others have said, people are fired with little notice. In my time there, essentially the entire Design Department was let go - twice. The pay is fine, a little on the lower end, but with no job security, no communication, and no real leadership or direction, it wouldn't even matter if it was higher. Tons of micromanaging and favoritism. The company is expanding, but is going dramatically downhill at the same time.

Pros

Most colleagues are great. Smart, skilled, and hard-working. Unfortunately, the original group of passionate editorial, sales, and marketing team has mostly been scared out or fired without reason in favor of the same cookie-cutter types who can deal with the micro-management.

Cons

No one who works here seems to enjoys it anymore. The mood in the Boston office is downright depressing and it doesn't seem much better for the field-based employees. Since the company is owned and operated by one person, nearly all decisions must get past him, so it's impossible to get the necessary resources to make the products, most of which are great, really take-off. Also, if you like working for a morally sound company with solid values, you won't enjoy working here. One "wrong" sideways glance at the President and you no longer have a job.

Pros

Nice office with lots of precious artwork.

Cons

Management is the downfall of this company. The CEO and his minions refuse to listen to anyone but each other. Reps are given unreachable goals and then scolded for not hitting them. Similar to the American Apparel doc, reps are forced to give up all or their rights by signing on the dotted line. So many sketchy practices and policies. The owner is a greedy tycoon who just sold off the company without a care in the world for his employees that made him wealthy. Just gross.
