Pros

Major Holidays off. Paid vacation and sick days. Medical benefits/ Life Insurance/dental insurance. 20% off discount, even on markdowns.

Cons

Severely understaffed in quite a few departments. There are many times one person is covering 2 departments and is still expected to give the same level of service even with more than 10 customers at once on a Friday or a Saturday. You page a manager for help and either they don't return your call or they say there isn't anyone to help. The departments near yours cant help because they are in the same situation. Pray you don't get a customer complaint for not being able to spread yourself across two busy departments. It doesn't matter the circumstances, you get a complaint and your in the office getting what they call a council, with a possible write up. And if you do get let go...management will have Loss Prevention walk you out like a common criminal...very demeaning. Management is young, inexperienced, and very cliquey. Remember those cheerleader type, popular, mean girls in high school??? That is basically Von Maur management. If you don't fit in, they will make you miserable until you leave. The moral in the store is so low that the regular customers see and feel it. Some customers have made comments to the employees that they don't feel comfortable in the store because many of their long time favorite associates are no longer there. Customers have noticed a rapid turn over within the store, and have no familiar faces to look forward to. These regular customers have witnessed the associates struggling and juggling 2 midsize departments (or 1 extremely large department by themselves) with no one to help. The scheduling system known as TESS, is an impossible mess leaving no time for a life. The scheduling system is random, and management doesn't check it before it has been posted. Some times there isn't a person opening up for a department and no one realizes it till the day of. Management will then start looking at other departments to see who they can use to cover the mistake TESS made. Finally, the dress code is awful. Doing stock in skirts and/or dresses with nylons is insane. We are supposed to be a fashion forward store, yet we are forced to dress like we stuck in the 50's. Please let us wear pants or at least more fashionable clothes.

Pros

Great pay for retail. Holidays Closed. Relocation Advancement. Sale Merchandise.

Cons

Those who drink the "Kool Aid", many of which are Upper Management, will stand behind any company policy procedure no matter how unethical or immoral. They are robots with heels. Saddest people in the world. When the company needs to clean house, they often let people go with out adequate reasoning or proof of factual events. This includes Associates, Department Managers and even Floor Managers at times. Everything is subjective. Highest turnover of any company I have ever worked for. Five Department Managers left in a two week time period voluntarily to work for competitors.....think about that. Really think about what that says about a company when they have twenty something Department Managers in one location. Floor Managers are expected to have no personality. They, along with Store Management, will tell Department Managers, "What are you going to do" when issues arise in which Department Management have no control. Department Managers are nothing more than glorified Sales Associates. They do no hire any employees but are expected to handle some of the most unprofessional and stressful coworkers I have ever worked with in my life. When Upper Management hires plenty of lackluster people, it is the Department Managers job to "mold" them into great sales leaders. How is this possible when all Department Manager input is overlooked, unheard and unappreciated? Answer: They don't care about you. Never have and never will. Upper Management will dig for information for you. They love those who nark on others since it provides reason for the company to lighten their overall work force by means of "discovered" information. Loss Prevention is always watching Associates and searching stock rooms weekly. This is an attempt to find problems with workers considering all is well when the workforce is a little lighter than before. Policies that date from 1872 include: -Outdated technology that is always breaking -Sexist clothing for woman -Men are not allowed into fitting rooms in fear that it may offend female shoppers (Less than five percent all of Floor Manager and Store Manager roles are held by men....very ironic if you put some thought into it considering it is retail) -Customer is always right and the employees are always wrong mentality -Upper management never second guesses their actions but are first to judge anyone else The company has recently opened two stores in the Metro Atlanta Area. Reverse discrimination is apparent in both locations. Many selected employees who have had valid customer complaints are still put on a pedestal and their faults have been overlooked. This has happened several times over the course of a few months. Numerous customers observe the ever increasing amount of diversity and communicate it to Associates and Department Managers directly. Executive Management continues to overlook this disturbing trend. Stores are understaffed intentionally. Plenty of call outs daily, leaving other Associates to cover areas left empty by feed up employees who call out (Can you blame them?)

Pros

o merchandise is nice o base pay is decent and competitive o hours of operation --- no extended holiday hours

Cons

It's hard to know where to begin because there are so many... o The turn over rate is the highest of any company I have known or worked for. People get fed up and leave. Yet, upper mgmt doesn't appear not to be concerned, as associates are viewed as expendables. A batch leaves, a new one comes in... o The floor and store managers are absolutely clueless as to how to run a business. They lack experience, education, and leadership skills. They focus on meaningless complaints and dated policies, while the things that matter are completely ignored. It seems like you're caught in a time warp --- they don't seem to get even the most basic of management principles. An associate said they are referred to as Von Martians --- meaning they don't think for themselves. They drank the cool aid, and are blind to what is truly going on. o TESS is a system that is cumbersome, and inflexible. It is a poor substitute for magagement o They prefer that you call in sick, rather than asking for necessary time to address a family or personal concern. They will happily have you work over, then deny a request for time off. o Mgmt is extremely impersonal. They don't appear to care for associate at all. Everything is one sided ---- everything is about the store, and employees don't count. o the Heroic program is a joke ---- associates have their friends call in for $10,00 o The dress code is from the 50's ---- making associates look worn and dated
