Not What It Used to Be

Pros

The most notable benefit is the company’s name recognition—it can carry some weight on a resume. Beyond that, any other "pros" really depend on your specific team or manager. Consistency across the organization is lacking, so your experience may vary widely.

Cons

There have been ongoing challenges with leadership and management, particularly around accountability for poor decisions. While transparency is emphasized in company messaging, it doesn’t always translate into day-to-day operations, which can lead to confusion and frustration. Employees are often viewed more as resources than individuals, and work-life balance can be difficult to maintain. Recognition and advancement can sometimes appear to be influenced more by internal relationships than by performance. Compensation is below market in many cases, and benefits have gradually declined over recent years. Since 2023, there have been annual layoffs in February, with some additional reductions happening more quietly at other times of the year, contributing to a sense of instability. The overall environment has become more challenging, and there are valid concerns about the company's long-term direction.

Pros

Best job I have ever had but it went down fast, as the Glassdoor Best Places to Work awards accurately show (2022 (#100), 2021 (#22), 2019 (#2), 2018 (#5)). Still has amazing people working there, and I loved working with the products and the customers.

Cons

Where to begin? Before and immediately after its IPO, this was a fantastic company to work for. The COVID boom brought out the best in all of us, and the company, people and its culture thrived. However, as the company expanded, new management brought from less perfoming companies, imposed their own culture, eroding what once made this place great, all in the name of profit. Don't be misled by their talk of a "culture of care"—it's nothing more than lip service, today. When the economy struggles, employees are the first to be sacrificed, regardless of performance. Mediocrity rules as the company no longer wants to be in the lead, but prefers to be "just another one". With Zoom struggling to grow, the company remains stuck in retrenchment, prioritizing cost-cutting over people. Whether by eliminating positions or outsourcing jobs to cheaper labor markets, leadership sees this as the only path forward.
