A Startup That Refuses to Grow Up

Pros

Nice memories of what was once an amazing place to work. The early days were full of smart, passionate people, genuine collaboration, and a real sense of purpose.

Cons

After 10 years and six rounds of investment, it’s disheartening to see this company still operate under the illusion that it’s a startup. Despite the time, funding, and opportunities, leadership has failed to evolve. Decisions are made reactively, not strategically, and there's a persistent unwillingness to acknowledge the maturity—or responsibilities—that should come with a decade in business. It’s increasingly clear that the company is rushing toward an exit, likely driven by investor pressure to show some kind of return. As a result, there’s constant turbulence: shifting priorities, chaotic restructures, and erratic changes in strategy. Long-term vision has taken a back seat to short-term damage control. The result? Constant layoffs, financial instability, and a deeply demoralized workforce. Many of the most talented and driven people have already left—or worse, were let go—leaving behind a team largely unprepared to move the company forward. The culture of innovation and collaboration that once made this a promising place to work has been replaced by confusion, poor communication, and short-sighted decisions. The people used to be the best part—smart, passionate, and collaborative—but that spirit has all but vanished. What remains is a skeleton crew, limited in both resources and morale, trying to navigate a company that seems unsure of what it even wants to be anymore. Frankly, I hesitate to even say whether anyone should apply here—I’m not convinced the company has the financial runway to hire at all. Unless you're comfortable stepping into an environment with zero stability and unclear direction, I’d strongly recommend avoiding this one. There are far better places to grow, contribute, and be valued.

Pros

Remote; interesting technology; diverse customer portfolio; brilliant engineers; supportive coworkers; actually revolutionary software.

Cons

Don’t work for marketing, sales, dev ops, or HR at this company. No transparency with c-level managements. No PIP plans or warnings of layoffs. At will termination employer. Does not have set growth plan for sales; scaled too quickly and now laying off people from other departments just to invest in more sales people (with the same number of leads and just splits accounts even further) while also vocalizing to existing sales members that the layoffs are their fault for not hitting quotas.

Getting Laid Off Felt Like Escaping

Pros

The compensation was competitive, and I worked with smart, talented people who genuinely cared about building quality products.

Cons

During my whole time there, we had layoffs roughly every 3-6 months, which completely tanked team morale. Each time people were let go, those of us who remained had to absorb their workload on top of our existing roles, creating an unsustainable cycle of burnout. Leadership issues overshadowed any positives about the product. HR would regularly check in with our team about certain problematic managers, promising changes that never materialized. Interestingly, some folks who provided candid feedback during these sessions ended up in the next round of RIFs while the managers stayed on. The product roadmap GTM strategy lacked coherence, with constant pivoting around pricing models, target users, and feature priorities. While iteration is expected at a startup, these changes often felt arbitrary rather than data-driven, making it impossible to build anything with proper architecture or scalability in mind. The best part of working there was definitely my teammates, but you can find great people at many companies. Unfortunately, the great people weren't the ones making decisions. When I was finally let go, despite the financial stress, I felt an immediate sense of relief that was noticeable to people around me. Sometimes you don't realize how bad a situation is until you're out of it.
