Ahead of Veterans Day, we want to recognize Abraham Kamarck, #Veteran and CEO of True Made Foods, a #NaVOBA certified, Veteran-owned business. A native of Washington, D.C., Abe grew up with Southern Italian cooking on his mom's side and Southern Virginian cooking on his Dad's side. After graduating college, he spent eight years in the US Navy as a Seahawk helicopter pilot before earning his MBA. Inspired to create a better ketchup for his ketchup-loving kids, in 2015, Abe decided to do it himself, and True Made Foods was born. Ever since, they've been making no-sugar-added versions of your favorite condiments like ketchup, barbecue sauce, and sriracha, sweetened only with vegetables and fruit. "There's no need to compromise on flavor or health at the dinner table, the backyard barbecue, or the ballpark. Instead, we're remaking America's iconic condiments using foods that are rooted in tradition, heritage, and most importantly, the ground."
At The GIANT Company, we believe that healing the planet and connecting families for a better future go hand in hand. That's why this week, in partnership with Constellation, a leading competitive energy and energy solutions provider, we announced a long-term renewable energy supply agreement to power our Pennsylvania operations with renewable energy. This project is a significant step in further reducing our Scope 2 carbon emissions and achieving our overall sustainability goals. It reaffirms our commitment to being a sustainable grocer and responsible steward of the communities we serve, all while bringing jobs and economic benefit to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
Over the past few years, we've been laser-focused on how we can best serve Philadelphia families," said Nicholas Bertram, president, The GIANT Company. "Today is the culmination of more than two years of collaboration between our team, ADUSA Supply Chain, and our partners at Swisslog and AutoStore, resulting in a state-of-the-art facility that will propel our GIANT Direct offering across greater Philadelphia and, for the first time, southern New Jersey. Our new GIANT Direct EFC represents the future of grocery and the future of The GIANT Company, as we are one step closer to realizing our full #omnichannel aspirations." Just in time for the holiday season, we're excited to be introducing the fourth beer cheese dreamed up by John Trogner of Troegs Brewing Company and Rynn Caputo of Caputo Brothers Creamery: Grand Cacao Beer Cheese. Like those before it, this cheese starts with 100% Pennsylvania cow's milk. Next, cheesemakers bathe the curds in Grand Cacao, a new year-round chocolate stout with notes of milk chocolate, roasty grain, and hints of sweet cream. Finally, the addition of Calabrian peperoncini adds flecks of color and an "elevated spiciness." The result is a sweet and creamy cheese with bright pops of heat and subtle chocolate notes. We're so proud of this partnership and the good it's doing, helping to keep Pennsylvania dairy farms thriving. Local dairies, local beer, local good!
For our first Meet a Team Member Monday of November, we excited to introduce Kristopher Mosley. Kris started his career at GIANT as a part-time grocery team member. In 2013, Kris became the Assistant Manager of Customer of Experience at our Northland Center State College store, where he continues to succeed today. In this role, he oversees all the functions of the front end, gas station, and janitorial staff. "My favorite part of my job is interacting with my team on a one-on-one basis and helping them engage more with customers," Kris said. So it comes as no surprise that the company value that Kris most identifies with is teamwork. "I have seen our team members rally together more during this pandemic than ever before. From part-time team members up to salaried management, the lines of job titles have blurred, and everyone has come together to get the store in the best possible shape. Kris, thank you for emphasizing the value of teamwork is in all you do -- we're so glad you're on our team!
Did you know that October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month? At The GIANT Company, we're working to break down barriers to access and #inclusion in the workplace and celebrate the many contributions of people with disabilities to our business, customers, and communities. Every year, the Work With Us Employment Coalition in Lebanon County, PA, recognizes the achievements of employers that support hiring individuals with disabilities and the employees themselves who excel at their work. Martin Strunk, manager of our Quentin Road GIANT in Lebanon, was awarded the 2021 Employment Champion Award! When asked about his approach to #hiring individuals of all abilities, Martin, pictured here with team member Christian Murphy, replied, "Everyone who applies and comes in for an interview is given a chance. No one is looked at any different due to their capabilities; everyone has a challenge or struggle in some way, shape, or form. Here at GIANT, we are always looking for people to join our team and our family. We love the mix of our #diverse team and will continue to hire te
Last night, our store teams hosted a spooktacular Halloween event! With the help of our nutritionists, more than 80 GIANT and MARTIN'S stores held a trick-or-treat scavenger hunt where ghosts, ghouls, and goblins discovered better-for-you treats, played games, enjoyed face-painting, and more. Thank you, American Dairy Association North East, Cabot Creamery Co-operative, Dot's Pretzels, Harvest Snaps, Herr Foods Inc., Made Good, Martin's Snacks, Sensible Portions, Sun-Maid Growers of California, Undercover Snacks, and USA Pears for supporting this family-friendly event! By the looks of things, it was a wickedly good time for all! And kudos to our team Kilene Knitter, MS, RD, LDN, Holly Doan, RD, LDN, Joni Rampolla, RDN, CSOWM, LDN, Shanna Shultz, RD, LDN, Taylor Guskind, RD, LDN, Charlotte Scheid, MEd, RDN, LDN, Mary Robinson, RD, LDN, Jennifer Schmiel, RD, LDN, Serena Corrigan, Morgan McConnell, Sharon Swope and Kelsey B. for creating a special evening for the families we serve!
For today’s Meet a Team Member Monday, we’re catching up with Wendy Cray Kaufman, copywriting specialist and expert storyteller at The GIANT Company. Wendy first joined the GIANT family in 1996 as a lead cake decorator at our Colonial Park location in Harrisburg, PA. After creating beautiful cakes for 10 years and working on her BA in English, Wendy transitioned into marketing and has been working with our creative team ever since. As a copywriter, Wendy writes or oversees all types of customer-facing communications. From in-store signage to social media, she helps bring our brand voice to life. Wendy was also an integral part of the launch of #ForTodaysTable. “The work that led to the launch pushed me way outside my comfort zone, in all the right ways. That kind of collaborative effort is like food for the soul. Working on something that was so based in authenticity and real insight from our shoppers was an honor, and I love watching it evolve.”
In celebration of American Pharmacists Month, we want to recognize our amazing pharmacy teams! Their impact can't be overstated; our more than 350 expert pharmacists are some of the most accessible healthcare professionals in our communities and the vital services they provide make a difference to the people we serve. Please join us in thanking our pharmacists and their teams for all they do to make our communities healthier while delivering on our purpose of connecting families for a better future.
