In recognition of National Disability Employment Awareness Month, we hosted Pennsylvania Secretary of Human Services Teresa D Miller at our Support Office in Carlisle, Pa., to celebrate the contributions of our team members with disabilities and highlight the value of a workforce inclusive of their skills and talent. The event included a panel discussion with experts from UniqueSource Products & Services, The Arc of Cumberland & Perry Counties (CPARC), Merakey, Hope Enterprises, Inc. and GIANT associates sharing their experiences, insights and advice for creating a stronger and more inclusive workplace. Said Secretary Miller, “Pennsylvania is better off when we include the talents of all people, and we are proud to mark National Disability Employment Awareness Month with GIANT and thank them for being an employer who shares this value.” #NDEAM
This Veterans Day and every day, we honor and thank the men and women, including many of our own team members, who have served or are currently serving our country. We are forever grateful for your service and sacrifice.
We recently said so long to summer in the best way possible – by hosting our Annual Family Fun Day at Knoebels Amusement Resort! Thousands of our associates and their families arrived at the famed Elysburg, Pa. park, ready to spend the day playing games, riding rides, enjoying food and getting to know team members from across the company. An annual tradition, we’re proud to offer this fun day to our associates and their families in appreciation of all they do throughout the year for our customers and communities. We can’t wait for next year!
GIANT believes everyone has a role when it comes to healing our planet for future generations. Important climate discussions are happening around the world this week, and here in Carlisle, we’re excited to share an update on the second phase of the solar project at our headquarters, now underway. Phase one, our solar roof, was completed in April and now, crews are trenching the electrical runs and readying the land for the installation of the racking system for our ground-mounted solar array. By this December, the completed solar system will offset 100 percent of the building’s electricity needs. But that’s not the only buzz around campus – we’re also prepping the land for a pollinator habitat, slated to open in Spring 2020. Full of flowers and plants, these habitats are vital to helping pollinators like bees, butterflies and other insects thrive and sustain our food supply chain.
Retail grocery is always changing and so are the needs of our customers, so it was great to hear the latest at #Groceryshop, the leading conference for grocery and CPG innovation. E-commerce, technology, loyalty – all that and more was on the agenda – and so was GIANT. Our chief marketing officer Matt Simon shared how the company has created a culture of courage to drive innovation, highlighting the successful launches of GIANT Heirloom Market, GIANT DIRECT and GIANT Choice Rewards. Sepideh Burkett, our vice president of store operations, participated in a panel discussion on how the company thoughtfully leverages technology in-store to deliver an outstanding customer experience, citing our chainwide rollout of Marty the Robot and frictionless checkout as recent examples.
“GIANT’S sweeping strategy shows a retailer committed to its customers and well in tune with what it takes to grow and innovate in a highly competitive market,” said Michael Browne, executive editor, Supermarket News. “The company stands as an example to its peers in a fast-changing industry and for its efforts, GIANT Food Stores has been named the Supermarket News 2019 Retailer of the Year.”
