We are pleased to announce the creation of the Brotman Baty Institute for Precision Medicine, a collaboration among UW Medicine, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and Seattle Children's. Founded with visionary gifts from Jeffrey H. and Susan Brotman, and Daniel R. and Pamela L. Baty, the institute — led by UW professor of genome sciences Jay Shendure, M.D., Ph.D. — will broaden and deepen our scientific knowledge and change the way we care for patients. Congratulations to Security Officer Derrick Manning, one of Valley's November Heroes. Derrick goes above and beyond to help patients and their families in the ED lobby, especially patients who are discharged and in need of resources. He put together a collection of resources at his desk and even helps patients call and secure shelter housing or various other resources when needed. Derrick is patient, cheerful and positive and is a vital part of our ED team in the evenings. He truly puts patients first while helping to keep the ED safe and secure.

Molina Healthcare created the Community Champions Award in honor of their founder, Dr. C. David Molina. Each year they honor individuals throughout Washington state who exhibit leadership, volunteerism and advocacy, mirroring Dr. Molina's commitment to service within the family and the community. Two Valley Medical Center employees were nominated for this honor by peers: Trevor Lanz, RN, MSN, Assistant Nurse Manager on 2 West and Hiroshi Nakano, Director of Value Based Care. They were invited and honored at Molina Healthcare's 2017 Community Champions dinner in October. Congratulations to Trevor and Hiroshi!

Guiding her Team Forward, Patient Financial Services Director Loris Kudela Named Leader of the Quarter. Even as a teen, Loris Kudela was leading, motivating and creating an enthusiastic atmosphere for others as the majorette for her high school. Now a committed, impactful leader and effective coach and mentor as Valley's Patient Financial Services Director, Loris has challenged herself, as well as her team, to stretch and take on new responsibilities and challenges for the organization.
