Here's to 2025, and continuing our work towards closing the Opportunity Divide!
Skills-first hiring is growing in the banking and finance industries. In this story by GBH Boston, Year Up United graduate David Rosario talks about his experience in going from forklift operator to working in an IT role, and current Year Up United student Kyle Johnson describes why he decided to join our program. Through our various training tracks, we empower students to develop the skills and confidence they need to succeed in industries that have historically been out of reach. For untapped talent looking to enter and navigate the world of work, having the right in-demand skills and the knowledge and support to make confident decisions about a job or career is critical. Our holistic solutions meet companies where they are to address their key business priorities and challenges while opening doors to opportunity for untapped talent.

Happy Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month! This year’s theme, "Carnaval – Celebrating Diversity," honors the vibrant histories, cultures, and contributions of the Hispanic and Latinx communities while shining a spotlight on intersectionality—acknowledging that identities are complex, multifaceted, and exist outside any box. Each week this month, Year Up United staff will explore Carnaval celebrations from different regions in order to showcase the diverse ways in which this festival is honored across Latin America. These weekly celebrations will culminate in an organization-wide celebration during October, where staff will come together to reflect on the month, share additional stories, and hold space to celebrate in real-time.

When Drew Marley joined Year Up, he was inspired by our mission to empower young adults and to close the Opportunity Divide. With a background in higher education and college admissions, Drew saw an opportunity to use his skills to make a meaningful impact in his community. Four years later, the amazing culture, benefits, and career growth opportunities continue to fuel his passion for working at Year Up.
Two events that shape the month of February are the commemoration of Black History Month and Lunar New Year. These cultural celebrations provide a unique opportunity to acknowledge the often-forgotten histories of Black and Asian people and allow us to shine a light on cross-racial and ethnic history, notably the power of unity when these communities partner together. It is also important to recognize those who identify as mixed race Asian and African descent, continue to have open dialogue, acknowledge all aspects of their identities, and celebrate the beauty of the intersectionality of both cultures. This year, Year Up staff recognized the month of celebration with the 7th annual Year Up Lunar New Year Celebration, hosted by our very own National Asian Pacific Islander Staff Resource Group (API SRG), as well as by creating space for our Black, African American, PanAfrican Staff Resource Group (BAAPA SRG) to highlight and celebrate a different staff member each week for their Black Excellence and contributions to the greater YU community.
Today, Year Up recognizes one of the greatest change agents in the fight for equal and civil rights for all, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. highlights the determination, resilience, and strength that lives within the African diaspora. In addition, we honor the power of a single unified message. Due to Dr. King’s tireless efforts, we have been able to name and address the systemic disadvantages present for all communities impacted, while centering the lived experience of Black Americans across our nation.
