Pros

I think the product itself has many useful applications and is well-created. I think this is a testament to the many very talented and dedicated people who are employed by Airtable. The product and the many great people who have contributed to it are the reasons why I have given the company two stars (as opposed to one).

Cons

I have to echo the sentiments of a previous review: management and the c-suite have created a culture of fear in which employees cannot speak up about almost any concerns. For example: I am aware of two separate instances in which different (white) managers told their employees (women of Color) that they would not receive promotions or pay raises in part because of their "appearance". They were asked to dress and present themselves in a more "professional" way, which was confusing because both women "presented" themselves in a way that was very much congruent with their peers. As a result, both women began presenting in a more "feminine" and "professional" way (e.g. wearing light makeup instead of going barefaced). This change satisfied their managers, and they were not approached again. Although HR and the CEO (and founder) were made aware of this issue, nothing was done on their behalf, and their managers were not reprimanded. I am also aware of instances in which multiple women were abruptly terminated after raising concerns about company policy or internal culture. In more than one instance, the employee was terminated during significant cross-team projects. As a result, their labor had to be picked up by their colleagues, who were not compensated for the increased workload and chastised when they spoke up about it. Seeing a colleague terminated for reasons that were (at best) unclear certainly helped contribute to a general atmosphere of fear and insecurity. I am also seriously concerned about D and I at the company. Many of the people of color at the company were hired in support roles, which paid significantly less than sales, design, or eng roles. After multiple engineers agitated for more diverse hires on their team, the CEO and founder stated in a company-wide meeting that non-white eng candidates often required more mentorship and training (?), and that we did not have the resources to sustain such a practice. His explanation was that the "top schools" just weren't producing enough non-white candidates (an excuse which diverts blame on the institutions), and that he was also unwilling to begin recruiting from CS programs that were more intentionally diverse. This was an answer that disappointed many of us. All in all: this is not a work environment I can recommend to anyone.

Pros

The pre-COVID Airtable to about late-2022 was an amazing place to work. Top-tier talent across all functions, from infrastructure to brand, top-tier product that users loved. Strong culture, especially during the remote times, outstanding perks, like a generous Learning and Development budget and an Equinox membership. That is long gone. There is still some good remaining, however. Namely, the ICs that haven't left are incredible in their resilience and belief in the product. Line managers I've encountered have also come across as competent and empathetic, which are words I wouldn't use to describe the people above them.

Cons

– All the people that made this place fantastic have been laid off, or left on their own accord due to the demise of our culture and clear product vision. – The lack of confidence in leadership is felt throughout the company, which creates a constant sense of unease in the air. Everyone is thinking the same thing, but doesn't want to say it out loud. – Despite losing so many people, leadership has become somehow more needlessly bureaucratic and impersonal. With 49% of the company laid off, you would think many of the processes that slowed us down would be eliminated. – This is coupled with no transparency regarding decision-making processes, especially decisions that are made last-minute, of which there are plenty. – Deep lack of empathy from the leadership for both users, the product and employees.

Pros

Intelligent, hard working and awesome IC/coworkers make it possible to put up with all the BS going on at any given time. Frontline managers are awesome and have your back despite their hands being tied by senior leaders. Product has HUGE potential if we can actually deliver enterprise level software.

Cons

Senior leadership, especially VPs and C-staff, are junior varsity trying to play in the big leagues and failing miserably. The nepotism is awful and is the key reason our company is slowing decaying from the inside out, as we continue to promote from within and the people being tapped are underqualified; not to mention our sales team continues to hire all of their buddies from Datadog and they are underqualified, entitled tech d-bags who are destroying our culture from the top down. C-staff are big vision people without the ability or skills to execute and they seem to be intimidated to engage with true enterprise c-staff or senior leaders at our customers. Airtable desperately need to hire professional senior leaders/c-staff who know what they are doing, have a proven track record for building a Saas company at scale and have experience leading companies to IPO readiness.
