Pros

Great colleagues and strong company history.

Cons

Executive leadership and Human Resources have badly damaged this company in an irredeemable way. You expect HR to protect the company, but I’ve never seen an HR team push the agenda of a CEO in the way you currently see at AEP. It is nothing short of disturbing. This is a terrifying place to work, with an unnecessary RTO mandate after 5 plus years of remote and hybrid work, a still new CEO focused on running the company like it’s an investment firm, and a Board of Directors now filled with members determined to make this company as profitable as possible at the detriment of employees and customers. Since Carl Icahn decided to intimidate AEP into giving him board seats, the company has turned into the utility version of Goldman Sachs. The kicker is that while the company is profitable, like it always is, the new CEO has structured the bonus in a way that is almost impossible for us to attain. He’s also intimated that employees have received bonuses in previous years that they did not deserve. Prior to him taking the reins at AEP. Did I mention the new CEO flattened the organization virtually ending any chance of upward mobility? Directors have been demoted. Senior managers have been demoted. Now, some leaders have upwards of 20 direct reports. So, 5 days in office, with awful annual bonus prospects, no upward mobility, below market pay etc. Sound enticing? I say this with all sincerity. RUN from AEP unless you have no other potential sources of income or employment prospects.

Pros

Good benefits packed, good starting pay, local team and management.

Cons

Over the last two years there has been a shift in the corporate culture and multiple changes at the highest level. Processes that worked have been changed for the purpose of standardization with disregard to efficiency. Any recommendations not coming from the corporate office in Ohio seem to fall on deaf ears. Most recently the new CEO has come in and implemented more change for the sake of change. His "old-school" approach is degrading the positive culture AEP was know for. His goal of providing the best product and experience for our customers will not come from disenfranchised and disgruntled employees. The return to office mandate is the last straw and has a lot of people updating their resumes.

Pros

They pay you on time every two weeks. The benefits are pretty good.

Cons

Senior management and executive leadership is flailing and has been since 2023. Newly promoted CEO Julie Sloat was let go and that communication came in a email to employees. Then there was an interim CEO who did a buyout at the beginning of 2024. New CEO in place who seems to have been placed for a purpose. There are two activists investors on the board of directors, from the Carl Icahn regime. There is too much change happening, there isn’t a change management plan in sight and the communication about all the changes is either nonexistent or very vague and unclear about strategic direction. Groups are being cut to reduce headcount and middle management is being demoted to individual contributors while other senior leaders are getting promoted. Many executive leaders have resigned. Return to office 5 days a week in June 1, 2025 has been a mess. CEO told employees in November that no changes would be made to work designations yet in office 5 days a week June 1, with very unclear communication about the how and the why. I used to be very proud to work for American Electric Power but that is not the case anymore due to the vague and ever changing story line being communicated.
