Pros

They offer a wide variety of career opportunities, and have a great company culture. They also hold high standards for on site safety, and genuinely care about the life safety / work compliance to prevent injuries and accidents to workers on site.

Cons

There is a large amount of pressure to work after hours and weekend days. This stresses life balance at times, and can place your family life and priorities at a compromise. Also, there is not a structured training program for experienced people crossing over from other industries, or other companies. It is easy to feel like you've been left on an "island" to learn how to succeed, learn, and grow due to the fact that there is not a set manager at times, or mentor.

Good company -- west region not so great

Pros

The company as a whole is progressive. The company as whole embraces technology, new ideas, training, etc. Large international company that has a culture of thinking out of the box and being innovative.

Cons

Understand this negative review is for the Western region only. No work/life balance -- no overtime. All salaried employees are exempt -- even low paying jobs. The western region is made up of two very small companies that were acquired in the past 10 years. They do not collaborate and are highly competitive -- each thinks they are better than the other. What does that mean to the employees? Lack of respect for management. Many of the legacy employees have "big" titles but not the education or experience to fill the shoes of those titles. It is a good old boys club. I have actually heard them say "we should have this person (female) to participate in interviews and we can show how diverse we are". Unfortunately they are hiring many experienced employees who only become frustrated because of the leaderships lack of knowledge and experience. They talk about collaboration, communication, etc. -- but don't practice these behaviors. My hope has been that things would change. I don’t see that happening until they move some people out of executive positions and move execs that know the area and have the contacts into those positions. This is only for the Western Region – it is the blind leading the knowledgeable and not open to learning and sharing information. People have used my ideas and taken credit for them. That’s just sad on so many levels.

Work Life Balance was a joke

Pros

Free cell phone with internet, ability to check my e-mails before I get to the office. Nice building, covered free parking, on-site deli. Frequent excessive leftover food from lunch meetings. Excessive spending on office supplies, coffee, high quality printer paper. Excessive spending on logo'd merchandise for employees. Two nice family events - Six Flags and Company picnic. I was actually over qualified and over paid for what I did, and I got a raise and a bonus - go figure.

Cons

Reduced original PTO, Work Life Balance was a joke. No flexible hours. Lots of company events with free wine and beer - not my thing. Boss devalued my cost saving and time saving ideas and instead was interested in how many other employees nominated me each month for an Above and Beyond Award. My family comes first and they were accustomed to me being accessible. My previous employer appreciated my hard work and allowed me to squeeze in my 40 hour a week career in-between family needs. Balfour Beatty was not the employer for my family.
