Pros

Seemingly more intelligent crop them some of the standard construction companies

Cons

If you want to have friends, family, or any life at all outside of work, DO NOT WORK HERE. More than any company I’ve worked for, this company does NOT care about its employees and you are nothing to them except a way to make a profit. This means they will work you to the bone to get the most out of you as possible, including “weekend work”. I wish I had asked about hours before I was hired so I would have negotiated my salary, but I honestly didn’t think about it- construction hours are pretty standard from company to company. Most companies you work 7:30-4:30, and pull some late days one or two days of the week, and you get off closer to lunch on fridays. Not here... When I was hired I made the same salary as at my old job, but I work 35% more. Your mandatory hours daily Monday-Friday are 7:30am (but you get looked down upon if you don’t come in closer to 7) and leaving at 6:30. Those are 11 hour days. You have a 30 minute lunch break. Also you have to come in for half a day one Saturday of the month. So I’m basically making 40% less than I was at my previous job where I was working 40 hours a week. The job is totally understaffed so there’s a TON of work to do. They don’t want to hire anyone else for a massive project which should have at least 3 more people involved in the planning because they want to save money. It’s no wonder everyone quits. I’m already looking for a way out.

Pros

Employees that you work with on a daily basis are very knowledgable. In the past 10 years, I have seen a lot of growth and change, not all good and not all bad.

Cons

Employees in division functional positions are not valued unless you are of a management level. Those of us not in a management role are not valued at all by supervisors or executive leadership at all. Some of us have been loyal to the company for a while and receive our annual COLA that is suppose to make us happy and unless you are of a management level and know how to pressure the upper management that you will leave unless you receive a better increase you just sit here and smile with your little increase and act like all is good because no one is going to listen to you any way. When you have other leadership positions receiving 5-25% increases if not annually then semi-annually every year for the past 3-4 years. Upper management has no clue of how to work together as a well-oil machine and they do not even value each other so therefore how could they value divisional employees. Since the lay off's of severa C-level officers, this company has gone further and further downhill. The turnover rate is the highest in the last 10 years to support this statement. There is no growth for division people (project employees not only receive nice raises every year but also better bonus'), and when you think officer's have your back they truly just let you down and do not listen to you when you try to discuss with them.

Pros

I received a paycheck and average benefit package. Occasional travel opportunities and training. Christmas eve was an annual holiday, which is unusual at most corporations.

Cons

The corporate environment is a "good old boys" mentality. Balfour Beatty is in financial trouble according to the business sites in Europe. The Western region is a mess -- there is no leadership -- just small fish in a big pond lacking management skills, or for that matter any skills (compared to other firms I have/am working for in the same industry) The projects are boring The marketing department is a proposal mill -- they go after anything and everything even when they do not have the experience or staff. The entire proposal development process is a joke -- they don't understand the process at all -- they hand in write-ups at the last minute and expect marketing to work most of the night to complete it -- non-responsive to requests -- and that is why they didn't make their goal for 2014 -- not even close Award lazy people and chastise hard workers No social graces -- very rough around the edges, but think they are sophisticated and polished. Overwork all staff and pay them a very low salary. Disrespectful But if you are into the environment described above -- go for it!
