Pros

The people at BBC are great people, I really enjoyed working with them. Normally the company has a very fun atmosphere and there is a lot of natural camaraderie among employees. The CEO, Mark Layman, really believes in the company and he cares about the people who work there.

Cons

Leadership is disconnected from the field and they make poor decisions because of it. It is absolutely a boys club and people are there for far too long after they've stopped adding value. Some functional positions are clearly hired without consideration for the staff who will report to them. One executive proudly said that during the hiring process they were told they shared the traits of a psycho/sociopath but that because these were traits of other leaders (Hitler comes to mind) this individual was hired anyway.

Pros

Good benefits--although standard for the industry. Training on the West Coast at a ranch in Oregon. Could be a competitor.

Cons

Ahhh, the cons. I can only speak for the Western Region. There is a complete lack of leadership and in my opinion, ethical behavior. The Western Region is made up of two legacy companies. One based in San Diego that did not have a favorable reputation in the A/E/CM Southern California area. The second based in Portland and well known in the Seattle area -- I had never heard of them. Egos abound. Where there is ego and pride there is no leadership. It is a yell and scream mentality as well as protect your position. They have not won any major projects in the Western Region and are not doing as well as they should. The leadership is primarily in their positions because of the acquisition by Balfour Beatty not because they earned it or are qualified. Even when the Western Region Executives are trained -- they are unable to grasp the full meaning. Collaboration and communication is non-existent. They talk about it but do not practice these behaviors. It's very much "I'm important and you are not" mentality. The marketing department is a joke. The leadership in marketing were promoted not based on experience or their record of winning pursuits but because they know how to "suck" up to leadership. It's a negative environment. I'm very happy to be away from Balfour Beatty -- when I think about my 2 years employed by Balfour -- my skin crawls...I wish them the best.
