Pros

My salary and benefits were good.

Cons

HR dept is fine unless or until you have a problem; not enough staff in case mgmnt/social work dept. Workload is two FT jobs in one. Some petty coworkers, lots of favoritism. Management is out of touch w/what workers do & do not care about this dept's high turnover. Mgmnt writes up workers all the time for being too slow or find other things to write ppl up for. It stays on your employee record there & makes it impossible to transfer to another dept.

Pros

It's fast paced and busy. You're never without something to do. There are plenty of opportunities for overtime and they are flexible with days off, schedule changes, and sick leave. In addition the training for your job is very good and you'll seldom be left wondering what to do as most staff members are knowledgeable and friendly with helping new team members. Overall an atmosphere of teamwork. Management will listen if you have an issue and for the most part try hard to solve problems that don't conflict with department policy.

Cons

The ability for promotion within the department is nearly nonexistent and schedules are seldom consistent due to high turnover. The job itself is very very stressful and people burnout fast. Due to this team members quit frequently and the staffing needs fluctuate. You can expect to work holidays due the facility being a full service hospital. In addition pay is not competitive with less stressful positions of similar skill level offered at different organizations. Management is prone to wasting their budget on equipment that doesn't work and wasting time enforcing policy which has nothing to do with making the department more efficient. They also grade you every month on your performance using a lot of arbitrary statistics which can be easily gamed once you know how they're measured.

Pros

Everyone works very well as a team. Nurses are treated with respect by physicians. As a non-profit, Carilion has invested in excellent affiliate organizations. The Virginia Tech Carilion (VTC) School of Medicine graduates first class doctors. The Jefferson College of Health Sciences (JCHS) experience (where I earned my BSN) was better than my experiences at three other colleges, including Duke, University of Florida, and University of North Carolina. Tuition reimbursement is available to employees for Jefferson College or other universities. I cannot say enough good things about Carilion Clinic and it's affiliates including VTC and Jefferson College of Health Sciences.

Cons

There is not much attention paid towards career planning and development. In my former company, I was tapped to be in the Executive Resources program for management development. To the best of my knowledge, there is no such program at Carilion Clinic. I suspect they have limited insight as to who their high potential employees are.
