Toxic Environment; no DEI

Pros

Great colleagues (in the trenches). The frontline teams - - CS, Marketing, some folks in Product - - are smart, kind, and genuinely care about the customer and each other. Remote work. Being fully remote was a plus, though often it just meant working from home while overwhelmed and under-supported. Meaningful customer relationships. The clients were often the best part of the job.

Cons

Toxic hustle culture. Long hours, overloaded workloads, and very little support. Success often depended more on how popular you were with leadership than on actual performance. If you weren’t in the “inner circle,” you were overlooked. No real accountability at the top. Leaders regularly shifted strategies and priorities with little notice, and when things went sideways, the blame landed on frontline staff - - not management. A handful of leadership (C-suite, EVP, SVP, and VPs) who are just terrible at interacting with and coaching teams. Very much a “bro” shop and culture, so good luck fitting in. DEI in name only. Despite surface-level statements about diversity and inclusion, very little meaningful action was taken. Initiatives often felt performative or abandoned altogether. Career development is nonexistent. There’s a lot of talk about growth and promotions, but no real plan or follow-through - - internal candidates encouraged to apply for roles, but then overlooked to hire friends from external applicants instead. Unless you’re a favorite, advancement isn’t happening. Reactive and chaotic. Constant pivots without clear reasoning led to confusion and burnout. There was no long-term vision you could actually rely on.

Pros

- The people you work with there are great, a lot of really talented developers, QA and PM's. - You can learn a lot by getting your hands dirty and putting the time in. - Half Day Fridays in the summer

Cons

- Round of Layoffs impacting a lot of talented people and leading to eventual turnover in the company. - After being acquired by private equity the company has changed for the worse. - Management is out of touch and seems to be focused on profit. - There are zero opportunities for career advancement here, all software developers have the same title. No junior, intermediate, senior etc. - Pay is well below market

Pros

- halfday friday - opportunity for young dev to learn a variety of stuff: docker, nscale, nodejs, backbonejs and deployments - People are amazing (co-workers are your strength) - It is relatively easy if you are familiar with javascript or programming - Lots of cool activities between workers

Cons

- The management cannot distinguish between their world class devs who contribute and keep teams working and the devs who barely do any work - There is no incentive to do things the right way, people who do things the right way and people who hack things around are considered the same - Developers are often blamed for Business Analyst shortcomings and for failed process especially when the customer complains about a feature not being what they expected even though the developer built it according to requirements that were written by BA and tested by a QA - Developers are not included in the feature decisions and features end up being complicated to build in the product - High turn over rate and bad project transition between developers - Technical team leads are not really technical. They have one or two who know their stuff and others who are just leads because they had a friend in the management team - The management seems to be giving random number at the end of the year for performance like some of my friends who were doing the heavy lifting were getting 3/5 when they deserved 5 or 4.5 at the very least - The feedback is not constructive, is either you are on the verge of being fired or you are doing amazing. The transition from amazing work to being fired is quick depending on a simple customer complain hence no trust in developers. - The salary is a joke. they want you to put work in, extra time and evenings without extra compensation. They say their salaries are competitive but that's a lie. They are way below average for developers at least -
