Pros

Duty First Consulting is great for those starting out in their career in federal consulting. DFC offers many opportunities to gain experience with supporting a variety of Federal Departments, clients, and projects. Managers are also very supportive and open to providing feedback and helping you grow to meet and achieve your professional goals. Since DFC is a small company, it allows for employees to get involved in internal efforts and business development opportunities. The company culture and staff at DFC are very welcoming and provides a lot of opportunities to make connections and bond with colleagues on your team as well as other service lines in the company. DFC also has a good benefit package and offers a lot of options for health insurance plans with some added benefits like the quarterly wellness benefits.

Cons

For the DC area, pay is low compared to other smaller federal consulting firms. If you are just starting out in consulting, the low pay is outweighed by gaining valuable experience to help you succeed and provide exceptional quality work for a variety of clients which can easily be transferred to future career endeavors.

Pros

Because Duty First is a small consulting firm, you get valuable client-facing experience at all levels. Many of the people who work at Duty First are extremely hard-working, detail oriented, and care about client results. Clear opportunities for promotions. Good PTO policy (thought it can be hard to actually take a lot of time off) and benefits. Work/life balance is better than at bigger consulting firms, considering there is minimal travel.

Cons

Some of the managers/higher levels at Duty First that have been with the company a long time see the company in rose-colored glasses and fail to take ownership of mistakes or acknowledge when a project did not meet expectations. There is sometimes failure to innovate or accept new ways of doing things, which will eventually leave Duty First behind. Pay is extremely low for the consulting industry, even as you move up in the company.
