Awesome! Cutting edge of AI and Retail

Pros

I am posting here because I really enjoy working at Focal Systems. They are work from home which allows flexibility. They have Friday in the office which is nice to if you want to meet people face to face and chat. The work is challenging and interesting. You feel like you are working on the cutting edge of AI applied to retail. No one is really doing this. There are copy cats of Amazon Go which automates the cashier, but who is automating the rest of retail like inventory management and planograms. Focal is the only one I know that is doing this with modern AI. Its very cool and interesting.

Cons

After COVID, a lot of the engineers went full remote which isnt the biggest deal but would be nice to have everyone in the same place. I like to be in the office with my team which isnt for everyone so I would like to get everyone back in the bay.

Strong growth opportunities if you are looking for it

Pros

Focal Systems is a pretty cool company, really exciting tech, with passionate employees. They are hitting a growth spurt right now so action level is high. The company has grown from 1,000 cameras deployed 6 months ago to now 20,000 and will hit 100k by end of the year. The leadership team likes to promote from within. The Head of Product for example started as an entry level web dev / data analyst. The head of supply chain started as a field ops technician. So if you want to grow your career and wear many hats, and grow, this is the place.

Cons

Like many fast growing startups, there is never enough time in the day to get everything you need to get done done. It is true to the core values. Its a work hard / play hard culture. So if you want that, go for it. But if you want a more relaxed cushy job, I would not recommend Focal. There were comments on here about this already so I wont repeat that.

Pros

Focal is a very fast pace and personal feeling startup. There was never any shortage of project based work, which made each project intellectually challenging and rewarding. There was a lot of collaboration between all teams, including engineering, hardware, quality assurance etc, which led to unique perspectives and opportunities to learn new skills. Not to mention that the Focal staff is a lot of fun to work with; real good group of people!

Cons

Occasionally experienced some pretty long work weeks, but what startup isn't this way.
