Pros

As a first year tax preparer you get to learn a lot. I was paid for the 60 hours of training necessary to be certified as a tax preparer in my state. I got a lot of help from the senior tax pro in my office, so I feel ready to come back next year and do well. I enjoyed helping find people all their deductions and sending them away happy with their refund. It seems like it may work out as a source of extra money during the winter for a number of years to come.

Cons

The starting hourly pay is pretty low. To be fair though, they are spending a lot of money to train you. After your first year you work on commission with a low hourly pay guarantee. I understand that the experienced preparers can do quite well.

Pros

Its a good part time job if you want to make a few extra dollars in the winter.

Cons

There aren't any solid incentives to work there. H&R Block has a program in place that attemps to encourage incentive by the opportunity to increase your pay rate each year based on your continuing education with them, there is complex percentage system for people on commission. However, if you work for a Block franchisee, they don't have to implement this system and can just put you on a straight wage in order to save themselves money. I don't think this is a good practice because it does not attract highly skilled and motivated individuals.

Pros

flexible with hours. I did learn a lot. If you always wanted to knwo more about taxes, this will do it.

Cons

No pay for going to training sessions. Most first year tax associates make $9 hour. After that, you make more if you get clients to come to you because you can make so much per return.
