Pros

H&R Block is the #1 company in tax preparation. If you want to demonstrate your tax knowledge and expertise, this is the place to be. There is a sense of family in most retail offices and you can't beat the tax training you'll receive.

Cons

H&R Block, after 50+ years in the business has a difficult time figuring out how to communicate information to employees and compensate employees fairly. It's a race to accomplish everything that needs to be done to be ready for business before doors are flung open on January 2nd each year. Organization is horrible. Benefits are almost non-existent (although better than before) for seasonal employees.

Pros

Good compensation, good people, flexible work environment, exposure to an IT environment that is complex and multi-faceted, good benefits, good time off policy, ability to move around within the company to advance your career, it's fun to be in downtown KCMO, it's an environment that is always changing, so the job doesn't ever get dull.

Cons

Some of the people managers lack people management skills; it's busiest around the Christmas season, which makes it hard to take extra time off at that time of year; there are reorganization changes almost every year that may or may not affect you; Block doesn't invest in projects that have a ROI of over a year. This prevents some necessary projects from being completed; it's a large company and there are definitely office politics in play.

Pros

the ongoing training (CBT-based and classroom-based) and the increasing pay scale

Cons

irate clients; no constructive criticism (i.e., what comes up during the offseason?)
