A Tale of Two Companies

Pros

Block is a great place to get excellent training and meet some incredible people. They have created an atmosphere where no matter your color, creed or orientation, you belong.

Cons

Unfortunately, the beautiful image of their culture and care for their employees stops at the door of the corporate office in Kansas City. I'm sure it's a Great Place to Work in the corporate office, but down below on the retail level, associate are miserable; under paid, overworked and under appreciated. Employees are leaving in droves due to mismanagement, unrealistic expectations and no respect for the people on the ground serving customers. If something doesn't change soon, Block will be forced to close offices because of staff shortages as a result of employees not feeling seen, heard or considered. And come April 15th be ready to be ghosted until you're needed again in November. I will never say don't work for H&R Block because it has the potential to be an incredible company, but that is going to require corporate executives to take a hard look at the value they place on retail employees and bridging the gap that exist between what is clearly two different companies.

Pros

Their training is comprehensive for individuals who have never worked in the tax sector. It provides skills that you can use in your own personal life as well. The office atmosphere is quiet and often employees are isolated in their cubicles, but the people are warm

Cons

For a beginner in tax, there's a decent amount of learning about their products so that you can recommend them to potential or current clients.

It's a middle of the road job

Pros

I like being in an office setting and it's definitely an office setting. It can be fun song sometimes. Most of the people that work in my office are friendly.

Cons

As a tax prep you only make $11 an hour an hour my son-in-law makes more than me at Wendy's. I stress and put myself through all this training and it never raises my pay. There's no real infrastructure on how to level up. You learn all on your own. It's very frustrating because tax laws very hard we heard and I'm pretty booksmart and I'm still having a tough time getting off off of level one. No one really helps you in my location anyway. Just took a 8 hour class i September so I could do the Emerald advance to only work 3 hours the entire season. Hardly get hours. Trying to raise my family on this income and it's just not there.

Pros

After your first season youre paid hourly plus commission

Cons

Bare minimum training, erratic hours, very poor customer service, and they charge entirely too much for their services and don't honor their guarantee.

Pros

I feel supported by the management and others on my team. I would not have spent so many years at H&R Block if it was a bad place to work. H&R Block is the best in the business and are here to serve the clients, not to work for the government.

Cons

It's a lot to get started and the training hours can be strenuous with a family or a full time job. The pay structure changes every year and is not always in the best interest of the employee.
