Pros

The clients. Schedule is somewhat flexible in that you can accept or decline work however they will pressure you to take shifts that you cannot work.

Cons

If you're part time, you'll work full time hours. You will get no benefits and pay raises are difficult to come by. Most clients are charged 18 to 25 dollars per hour and most caregivers make less than 11 an hour. Your schedule is consistently changed every couple weeks because of the extremely high turnover in employees. Most leave because management is hopelessly disorganized as the home office has many people who seem to just do their own thing. On days off you will constantly get messages and emails asking you to take shifts, so even in your downtime you're not left alone. If you're looking for a job with benefits then this isn't the one. I am a part time employee and have worked full time hours for months. If you don't suck up to management you will be " punished" by missing out on incentives such as bonuses.

You get to meet new people by caring for them.

Cons

No benefits whatsoever so if you have a death in the family or get sick/hurt, there is no sick pay or insurance. Prepare to be retaliated against if you can't make it to a shift in an emergency (they'll either take hours from you or take your client completely away). Awful owner and the office staff weren't that great either (I liked one but the others are very superficial). The owner doesn't care about the workers or the clients. He's in it for the money.

Exploitative but a good way to get care giving experience

Pros

A viable way to get care giving experience. They provide basic training. They provide you with a steady list of clients to work with. I'm not sure if this is a pro or a con but the franchise that I worked for has a food pantry for employees that are too poor to afford a box of macaroni and cheese or a can of chili.

Cons

Inadequate pay scale that is hard to live on unless you work A LOT of hours. Home Instead makes a lot of money off of your endeavors and in return you get low pay, little to no benefits, poor management and sketchy company policies such as "non-compete" agreements and illegal pay deductions. If you have a problem with that then expect to be put on hold or sent to someone's voice mail who will never call you back. The Home Instead franchise model is exploitative and based on numbers. Instead of becoming a number, you might want to start your own business and cut out the middle man who is mediocre at best!
