Pros

A few years ago, a good friend of mine shared how her emotional spectrum had been stretched by parenthood. Her capacity for joy grew tremendously, and conversely her capacity for pain grew, too. The same can be said about my experience working at InStride. We are a startup focused on changing the world by removing barriers to higher education for working adults and their families. This. Is. Hard. If it were easy, someone would've done it already. So, yes, there are days when I've never felt more challenged. But, it's also on those days that I feel more joy and fulfillment in my work than I ever have before because I am surrounded by some of the most passionate, smart, collaborative, kind and empathic team members I've ever known. I am beyond excited for the impact we are creating with our incredible partners, and inspired every day by the stories of our learners.

Cons

We're a young startup, so not all of our processes are fully baked (which can cause churn), but I also know we're working every week/month/quarter to evaluate, improve and ultimately mature our business processes to be successful at scale.

Thanks for your review! As you know, our mission is an important but audacious one, and we’re up for the challenge. You’re a part of the reason why coming to work every day is both inspiring and fun. We will continue to build and support our culture, employees and processes while scaling. Thanks, again, for sharing your perspective.

Pros

- Smart, passionate people working there - Important mission to bring free or reduced cost education to employees - Strong team culture

Cons

- Work life balance can be a challenge but leadership does encourage using the unlimited PTO policy - Unrealistic expectations and micro management from leadership can hinder innovation and creativity

Thanks for your review! We are building a team of caring and smart people to help bring our mission to life. Our team culture is very important to us, so we’re glad you feel the same. You’re right that we do offer an unlimited PTO policy and it’s there to help ensure a work / life balance for our employees. In fact, during the recent stressful times of the pandemic, we’ve even added six paid holidays (InStrider Wellness Days) to the calendar to give employees extra three-day weekends and an opportunity to rest and reset. And thank you for your feedback about management expectations. We aim to set clear management by objectives (MBOs) each year to ensure transparency and alignment on expectations at the get-go but also leave room for re-evaluation Please don’t hesitate to also reach out with any more details you’d like to share: Feedback@InStride.com.

Great Mission, Not-so-great company

Pros

Incredibly smart, talented individuals here all committed to the inspiring mission

Cons

The employee burnout here is absolutely real. Many join because it looks good on paper, but many have left and will continue to do so because it's chaotic and toxic under the hood. Everyone is super smart, dedicated, passionate to deliver but it almost feels like you're running on a hampster wheel, expected to join marathon, back to back meetings, work crazy hours, have vicious and non-productive feedback loops that make you question your expertise, lack of direction, where you're expected to sell solutions that solve D&I challenges, and yet the company itself doesn't dedicate or devote enough to the cause internally.

Thank you for your review. We are disheartened to hear that this was your experience. We take your comments very seriously. From the inception of InStride, our leadership team has worked very hard to instill a culture of inclusivity, equity, and transparency, starting with the Founder’s Memo. We support this vision by implementing tools and processes to strengthen feedback loops and train managers, including our weekly company-wide “Connect” meetings, our InStrider Engagement Survey, and our performance management tools that help us stay aligned on goals. And although we work hard, we hope and expect employees to maintain a meaningful work-life balance. Please don’t hesitate to also reach out with more details; we’d love to hear from you: Feedback@InStride.com.
