Pros

Company is built around a culture of respecting its employees: make the hours you need, take the vacation time you need, execute on your goals the way you see as most appropriate for the need you've been tasked with delivering on. Company vision / mission is incredible: Driving to make medicine more affordable and personalized for the masses. Senior and team leadership consistently walk the walk in terms of being goals and patient focused. Company is rapidly growing, working on super hard stuff, and also super complicated stuff (both the world of DNA diagnostics specifically and the complicated nature of medical services broadly). This can make it hard, and stressful, and challenging... but if you like challenging, hard work, it makes it all the more rewarding. People are just awesome: Smart, driven, eloquent. Substantially more women and minorities than most tech companies I know (in both technical and business groups). I love coming to the office and so do a vast majority of people who work here (we actually poll morale and publish it company wide, so this is a quantifiable fact). You're not gonna make top top dollar (that's life in biotech versus software), but they pay plenty well and the snacks/lunches/hours make up for it.

Cons

Company is in the tail end of a transition from an effectively org-chart-less, flat, "pool of people who get assigned to project teams which are then broken up and reformed on later projects" culture to something a bit more structured (basically a series of teams which have a clear lead to facilitate cross-functional efforts, and fungible resources below them), while still maintaining key principles such as no titles, peer review up/down/laterally, ability to move between projects, etc. This caused some confusion, especially mid-transition (pretty good now though) and people who really feel drawn to mega-flat orgs did not appreciate the change (see one of the above reviews), though most employees really do seem happy with the increased clarity. There are still times where people struggle to know who is in charge of some component due to the semi-flat, highly cross-functional operation. Company is currently in a hardcore "deliver products" mode where cash (and more importantly time) is an incredibly precious resource, so not too much time is spent on letting people try totally new things, explore new interests, etc for career development. That's just the nature of the beast. If/when we're profitable we'll be able to hire more junior employees or allow people to learn a bit more on company time, etc... for now we tend to ask people to do what they're good at. Now, plenty of people advance/grow by doing that, but it's not because the company let them spend lots of time truly learning on the job, but because they demonstrated that they were capable and were given more (often related) responsibilities as a result.

Pros

Very smart people coming from very diverse backgrounds. The company culture that Invitae was founded with (similar to Valve) helped produce a lot of innovation and fostered cross-functional teams that encouraged people to learn and grow, and in some places in the company that culture still thrives. There is still lots of time flexibility, unlimited PTO, some catered lunches and snacks.

Cons

The injection of a hierarchy that "doesn't really matter" has resulted in a lot of confusing doublespeak at meetings. Leadership seems to be in conflict with middle management, and middle managers seem to be in conflict with each other. Squabbling over resources seems to take precedence over interest in solving the real business problems; this petty territorialism trickles down in the form of questionable additional meetings and superficial tracking behaviors to "justify" why a group has a certain headcount. Worst of all, neither leadership nor middle management currently take any interest in helping employees learn and grow; as a result, some middle management feels totally justified in claiming a premium on everyone's time while offering nothing in terms of career development.

Pros

- Work on meaningful solutions to help improve people's lives - Interesting, challenging work - Start-up culture - fast moving, progress driven, empowered environment - Amazing people - very diverse backgrounds and just good, enjoyable people to interact with and learn alongside - Great benefits - flexible leave (i.e., unlimited PTO), benefits fully paid for, free lunches, endless snacks, commuter benefits, etc. - Solid work/life balance - we work hard, play hard, but genuinely people here want you to spend time with your friends and family after work and on the weekends (i.e, not trying to burn people out here)

Cons

- Can often appear disorganized - structure seems to be a bad thing here in many areas and that means there is some wasted, disorganized efforts where people aren't talking to each other or sharing as they should. - Sometimes slow to make decisions - seems like there are some issues/decisions that just linger longer than they should.
