Pros

Discount. Made lifelong friends born out of shared trauma. Diversity.

Cons

Too many hours for too little pay. Endentured servitude. One day off most weeks a year. No real overtime. No job security. Some managers make minimum wage for full time paychecks up to 130 hours. Lack of communication. Upper management only cares for their own wellbeing and not the stress or condition of their employees. At least one open to close shift a week. Too much standardization. Majority of time spent working alone in store. Sales goals and expectancies are too high and unrealistic. Sales associates make minimum wage for 4-8 hours a week. They are held to same selling standards as management. Sales associates hours are cut on a whim, day of. Sales associates are expected to come to work on same days notice. "Promotions" based on necessity of upper management and not on effort or accomplishments. Pay is deducted to lower and level out any promoted mager so there is little pay increase. Sometimes co-managers at large stores make more than store managers of small stores. Work weeks are no less than 45 hours and mostly 50-60 hours per week. Everyone from manager down is expendable at any given moment no matter how long you've been with the company. Vacation policy is hard to work with, you must take a full week off from Sunday to Saturday. The balance of tasking and selling is impossible to accomplish 100% with the hours and tools given. Upper management will never help cover stores or help sell when they do not have the proper amount of management staff for stores. Instead they force other store managers to cover other stores on their off time thus extending their work week even further. Store managers are all too frequently left to work open to close for a week or two or three or more without anyone hired to relieve them. Breaks are not mandated or required for any associates or managers over the age of 18 and usually not taken due to lack of time. Management staff work minimum 9-9.5 hour shifts each day with no break. We are then told to put in extra hours over that time to accomplish tasks of which we don't get paid for since we are commission based.

Long hours, low pay

Pros

Great atmosphere to work in and you almost always have fun on your shifts, and the 40% discount doesn't hurt either!

Cons

Zero work life balance. When you are brought in as a co manager you are told that you have a minimum of 45 hours a week you need to work and if you want to make a little extra money from sales you can work more. That's wrong. The real minimum is around 55 hours a week. I was there for almost a year and averaged 58 hours a week. You generally only get 1 day off and your hours don't count against the budget so that don't want you scheduling many part time hours so they don't have to pay them. If you do the math for their base pay plus the commission you work and then divide it by the hours you work you are making around minimum wage. Sure hitting and exceeding your sales goal can make your check look nice during the peak times, but when it's slow It's almost impossible to get enough commission to equal over 8 or 9 dollars an hour.

Pros

- Great company. Passionate about promoting from within, charitable, they encourage you to be you. - Fun products - Music - Meet great people

Cons

- Discount. As a manager you get 40% off which sounds fantastic but its limited. You only get a certain amount to spend from you discount and when its gone its gone. You have to wait another month for it to kick in. - Hours. You will work more than the required 45 hours. Always. This is not a job for those who have responsibilities or lives outside of Journeys. Also, if your a manager be expected to work 6 days a week. Even if there are more than enough managers in your store you will still only get 1 day off. - Pay. You get a weekly base pay ( $150-$200 a week) and then 4% commission on your personal sales and less than 1% commission of what your store makes. If your a high volume store than this really wouldn't be an issue. But if your in a low income area you will struggle. Also, you will HAVE to pay your sales people minimum wage only. That makes it hard to attract experienced sales people because they will not accept minimum wage. - Selling. No one likes a pushy sales person and thats exactly what you have to be at Journeys. You are required to push socks, shirts, laces, cleaning kits, pants, back packs, and all their other silly accessories. I'm sorry but no one walks in a shoe store looking for a purse or a cat shirt. Also, the socks wouldn't be so hard to sell if they weren't $18-$30. - 4 on the floor. Journeys requires you to bring every customer 4 pairs of shoes. Every time. This gets messy. First off , unless your working in an area where someone has an extra $60 to blow on a pair of shoes, this won't work. 4 on the floor is unrealistic in low income areas 90% of the time. If you do not sell a person multiple pairs of shoes you will get in trouble. However thats unfair because it's all luck. Its not like your adding on something thats $3... Its an expensive pair of shoes. - Breaks. You might get one but you most likely won't. Since your pay is mostly dependent on sales taking a break really hurts you financially.
