Pros

Their ability to hide all of the companies that they own and their financial ownership which is disguised as an ESOP

Cons

I sat through countless leadership meetings listening to executives praise themselves on bullying terminated employees (without cause) into signing full release of claims in order to get 14-30 days of pay so it didn’t impact their workers comp profile. One exec went as far as saying “I threaten so much legal action that I’ll exhaust them into signing”. They also go as far as openly discussing their goal in an acquisitions (which they have done 10+) is to cut deep and fast because they only want to retain 20-30% of employees from acquired companies so they can drive profitability to maximize ESOP payouts. And that brings me to the ESOP which is a farse. The majority of the company is owned by a single Australian national who oddly has no online presence at all (shady). This gentleman has granted large amounts of ESOP shares to his key lieutenants and the Company routinely buys back shares on an annual basis and grants new shares each year so they maintain current ownership. The result is that these executives have been paid tens of millions over the last 2 decades while they make the rest of the company hold their shares until retirement…..but if you leave you lose your invest shares or you have to wait to be paid out at a rate that the company deems reasonable. Worse they give a piece of paper every year to employees to show them that their shares are now worth $$$$$ which compels employees to stay in a poor work environment receiving below market wage and benefits. The leadership team all refer to this as entrapment that drives tenure. My soul was rotting working here, so I left and I am so glad I did. They do not care about their employees and the narrative that the ESOP is an investment in your future is just not true. The ESOP is a tool to pay large amounts to executives annually and who knows if they are paying taxes on it since they are Australian citizens and weirdly invisible online.

The above is just so utterly false it warrants a fulsome response. Therefore, for the reader who prefers the facts, we are happy to share the following information that is all verifiable by speaking with any of our longer term employee-owners (from the front desk receptionists to mid-level managers). Please feel free to call. There are many reasons why the average tenure of our agents is 6+ years, our CS and administrative staff is 10+ years, and more than half of our management team came from companies we have acquired over the years! Claim 1. Bullying terminated employees False. Only once in the company’s 34-year history has there ever been a reduction in force/layoff. This was after a recent acquisition where the acquired company’s software team was going to be duplicative, and there being no roles for them as we had converted their customers on to our software, which was superior in all ways than their existing software. This reduction in force was approximately 9% of the staff of the acquired business and mostly comprised of their technical/software team. Those employees were provided: (i) retention bonuses that exceeded $500,000 in the aggregate, (ii) severance pay (that was not otherwise available) of (a) 1 month of pay if tenure equaled less than 18 months, (b) 2 months of pay for tenure between 18 months and 30 months and (c) 3 months of pay for tenure of 30 months or more; and (iii) COBRA coverage for the period of their severance payments listed above. Claim 2. Cutting acquired employees from acquisitions False. Subject to the above clarification, we value all acquired employees and we have NEVER reduced headcounts post acquisition. Our business is all about answering phones and you cannot successfully do that without well-trained staff and adequate staffing levels. We openly invite all potential sellers (to Map) to call any of our past sellers. Most keep in contact with both the company and their previous employees and know we (1) never lay off employees, and (2) regularly improve both benefits and wage rates post acquisition. Claim 3. ESOP is a farce (Employee Stock Ownership Plan) False. Our ESOP was created over 2 decades ago and has changed the lives of countless employees over this time. For example, long-term agent level employees with 6 and 7 digit payouts are commonplace. Our Australian founder does not and has never participated in the ESOP. It is also worth mentioning that an ESOP is an employee benefit plan that is highly regulated by both the IRS and the DOL. The ESOP is not and cannot be limited to “a small number of hands” and all full-time US employees participate in the ESOP, in accordance with IRS & DOL regulations. The Plan has been audited annually. Through the ESOP, our staff own our business. Our employees own 100% of the company. They have never contributed 1 cent for their ownership position nor have they ever sacrificed salary into their ownership positions. Our employees ownership positions exists simply due to the establishment of the ESOP in 2002 for the benefit of then current employees and new employees who have joined since that time. Claim 4. Majority owned by a foreign national(s) False. Our Australian founder has not been an owner or a shareholder, period, since the creation (by him) of the ESOP in 2002. This means, for the past 22 years the shares of the company have been allocated to the employees in the form of shares within the ESOP and the value of those shares are payable upon retirement or termination of employment (at any age) from the company.

Pros

I got to work from home.

Cons

Where to begin. I started my career at Ruby before MAP acquired them. Working at Ruby was a dream, MAP is a nightmare. When my father was dying leukaemia, I was pulled into HR because my call times were a bit higher than normal (nevermind that I'd been told I was up for a promotion a week prior). I explained that my father was dying and the longer times between call availability (not usually exceeding 45 seconds) were to accommodate me wiping my eyes and blowing my nose. I was told this was not a valid excuse and I would be investigated for "Call avoidance" and likely will be let go, but at best will be put on a final warning. (There were no previous warnings for any behaviors, on the contrary, I have stacks of client compliments and peer shout outs extolling my excellent work ethic and helpful attitude), I had just received a pay raise that was promised when I was hired, over a year ago. My father passed, I took the allotted time off to grieve, and when I came back, my second day, I was pulled into HR and let go, citing my "call avoidance" as the reason. They refused to allow an adjustment of time when I could prove I was on the phone with IT for a technical issue that took our IT person nearly a half hour to figure out. Even my manager went to bat for me and said the time should be adjusted on my schedule because it was their issue, not mine. No dice. If you get up to go to the bathroom when you're not on break, you cannot get back into adherence for the remainder of the day because of those three to five minutes and they will berate you for it. I was questioned over 30 seconds of after call. MAP cut out PTO and combined it with our sick leave, so five days a year total combined sick and PTO. MAP took our five year sabbatical. Mao took our bereavement leave from 5 days to the federally mandated 2 days. They took our wellness fund ($200 a year per employee to improve our offices because we work from home) , our 2 wellness days, and our bonuses were cut significantly. Morale is at and all time low. Our clients are not happy with our services any longer because with the excessive time constraints, we are not able to offer the same attention to detail and personalized service we could offer before. They also cut our management team from 30 to 10, just in my department. They didn't compensate those managers, they didn't offer assistance, they just left them to drown. Employees and clients are leaving left, right, and center because of this, and they should. It's a sinking ship.

Our sincerest condolences for your loss. For privacy purposes, we will not address any specific incidents in public forums. However, we will speak about Ruby policy. Our adherence expectations allow for roughly twenty-four minutes in an average eight-hour shift in which a Ruby can be out of adherence and still meet the adherence target. This is in addition to the two fifteen-minute rest breaks and thirty-minute meal breaks scheduled throughout a shift. We adjusted some of our time-off policies to better align with the other divisions of Map; however, we have offset those changes with permanent pay increases to ensure no negative financial impact on our Rubys. Additionally, in our efforts to right-size our staff and honor our commitment to not have any additional layoffs, the leaders that returned to roots did so while keeping their entire compensation packages intact, meaning their salaries and benefits did not change. We understand that during times of rapid change, not all information will make it to every employee and therefore some assumptions will be made. However, we welcome you to schedule office hours with a leader of your choice and we will gladly address any questions and clarify any misconceptions you may have.
