Eastman's Dream is Dead!

Pros

MF used to be an amazing place to work. Founder Rob Eastman infused everyone with making musical gear affordable and accessible to anyone who wanted to play. That company, however, no longer exists. The corporate structure has been dismantled. MF exists now only as a brand name and a website.

Cons

Since Guitar Center took direct control over the company, the MF distribution center has turned into one of the most poisonous and hostile work environments I've ever had the misfortune of being in. Employees are treated more like inmates in a prison than valued human beings. The rules have become harsh, overly authoritarian, and just plain bizarre. People are fired on a daily basis for minor infractions and the company is having extreme difficulty finding quality replacements. These issues are spilling over into customer service. Customers are being sent used or damaged merchandise and being charged new prices.

The Best of Times Becomes The Worst of Times

Pros

There are still some amazing employees and managers at MF that have integrity and pride. They are, unfortunately, being weeded out in favor of incompetent, power hungry zombies. MF used to be an amazing place to work with a very friendly, supportive environment. Now, the environment is hostile, uncaring, and unfeeling. There are supervisors who understand how to create an effective team, but they are on their own, with little or no support from upper management.

Cons

The biggest con is management's fanatical devotion to shoving rules and regulations down everyone's throat. Employees on the floor refer to the DC as the "2-10 Pen"; meaning the Penitentiary on Highway 2-10. The restrictive and oppressive environment makes people feel like they are in a prison. It's clear that the average employee is a number, not a human being. Members of HR use their authority to bully employees and are not held accountable for their actions, even if they step over the line into unethical behavior. Management is always right, the employee is always wrong, regardless of the situation. The company is losing their A-List staff at an alarming rate and are unable to replace them. Musicians Friend as a company has already been destroyed by the ineptitude of Guitar Center. If the company keeps losing money at the current rate, MF will vanish with a couple of years.
