Pros

great benefits, including a generous retirement contribution. Generous vacation time for professional staff. Some very hard-working staff who care about the university and its students, some of the best coworkers I have ever had. My direct supervisor is immensely supportive of the staff in my office, and shows respect and appreciation for the work they do. The students are very motivated and ambitious, partly due to the coop program and the experience they gain. They have high expectations, keeping you on your toes to work with them. There are plenty of opportunities to be creative in order to meet their needs.

Cons

President Aoun is a petty little man, who seems to think he's morally and intrinsically superior to everyone else, just because he's the president of a university. He's an autocrat who shows no respect for the people who work for him. Professional staff are treated like second-class citizens, and faculty are treated only somewhat better. There have also been instances where he has been shut down to students, the prime constituents of our university. He lashes out at any one who offers constructive criticism. He has started chipping away at some staff benefits, such as the 4 day work week in the summer.

Pros

Great benefits. I had the opportunity to complete a Master's Degree due to my tuition reimbursement benefits. Other benefits are great as well, such as a discount on car insurance, health insurance, etc. As a strong academic institution, there are many opportunities to further yourself in addition to classes through lectures, seminars and guest speakers. Employees are motivated to assist students and their overall dedication for the students well-being can be inspiring.

Cons

New employees to the university enter highly motivated to assist students. Weathered employees tend to count the days until their retirement. The University has dramatically changed over the past 10 years (physically and ideologically). Many weathered employees (those who have worked for 3+ years) tend to resist change and fight new ideas. Movement up the ladder is not easy. Often you need to get the attention of senior management to be considered for a higher position, whether you are qualified or not. Although administrators try to assist students in their needs, administrators tend to give the "NU Shuffle" to other employees sending them on a goose chase to find the answers. Overall, it is a very administrative bureaucracy.
