Pros

The best part was the people that are trying to keep this place afloat. There’s a certain level of camaraderie. I suppose you bond in the presence of extreme adversity.

Cons

I can speak for the IT side only. Senior leadership says “culture eats strategy for breakfast” - they need to assess themselves to see why the culture is so and the employee morale is nonexistent. People are worked to death with little to no appreciation. People are leaving in droves because leadership doesn’t have EQ. PenFed IT is one dysfunctional ‘family.’

Pros

Occasional free food and snacks and a number of middle managers trying hard to do the right thing, in spite of incompetent senior executives.

Cons

CEO cares only about himself and his travel schedule. With a ridiculously weak Board of Directors, there is no check on the utter incompetence and malevolence of the Executive Team. This organization likes to make believe that they care about veterans, but they don’t, using them as mere props. They certainly don’t care about employees who are overworked and underpaid. Can you imagine having to take a vacation day for Thanksgiving or Christmas?? If a study were ever conducted on how not to run an organization, PenFed would be the poster child. Do yourself a favor and work somewhere else. You will be glad you did.

Pros

Decent vacation and health benefits. Co-workers are great people for the most part. There's parking available.

Cons

They call themselves a destination employer but I don't think they know what that means. They run it like a small corner bodega with a leadership that likes to micro manage (at least mortgages) but thinks that because there's a new CEO that bought new modern offices they are a hip start up and it's a privilege to work there. Complete hypocrites that will not reward even employees that make a positive difference (because they might not have a degree; although they themselves only got their degree within the last 10 years), probably because they might steal their lime light. HR is not there to protect the employee, but the company. Organizational loyalty is not rewarded and personal loyalty, perhaps, until that person gets the boot. Training is non-existent so you'll be stuck in your position or set up for failure if you show initiative and get promoted, unless you like doing your superior's job on top of your own AND play your cards right with someone even higher up, otherwise, they might not notice your effort, then, you'll be on your own.
