Pros

Pay is average, bonuses are good. Nothing positive to say about PetSmart management. Understaffed due to head count limitations. PetSmart associates are friendly. How PetSmart was voted among Phoenix Best Places to Work is misleading.

Cons

A short week at PetSmart is 50 hours / week. A routine week is longer. PetSmart Operations calls anytime day or night. Working for PetSmart is a 7x24 ordeal. Failure to join a teleconference is career ending. Health Insurance is expensive and provides limited coverage. Training and promotions are limited to the chosen few. If you're considering a JOB at the pet store, American Express is several blocks away.

Pros

You get to see animals.

Cons

I worked for Petsmart for 3 years. I planned my entire life around this company. I went to school to work at corporate, I worked my butt off. I truly, genuinely used to love my job. Petsmart says they're all about supporting current employees. I interviewed for FIVE corporate jobs and was not valued because I didn't have real world experience outside of school for all of them. Do you want to know why I didn't have out side of school experience? I was working 40 hours a week with Petsmart and taking 18 credit hours. They're full of crap. It also became very obvious through all of these interviews that the people in corporate have NO clue what store level is like or what any of these positions even do. Every interview included me having to explain what my job is because they don't know. I put literally all of myself into this company and left feeling undervalued, exhausted and incredibly sad. The response to the COVID pandemic was absolutely horrendous. I watched myself, my staff and my fellow managers deteriorate as this company took advantage of their employees. It became very clear very quickly where the priorities were. Somehow a BOOM in business but we have no hours? I'm sorry but I don't believe it. I've been reading these responses about "trying their best to navigate COVID" but it's all bull. Your employees are exhausted, miserable and having breakdowns constantly. No requiring of masks, not enough staff, no incentive to keep working there. You paid insurance for a couple months? Wow, cool. Sucks for the part timers who don't get insurance. I have watched so many employees who once loved their job be completely broken down. There's no morale, no way to boost it, because this company has made it abundantly clear that they don't care about their employees. It's sad. You guys really have no clue what we're going through here, and you don't care. You keep saying you do, but your actions say otherwise.

Pros

Dogs are fun. Discount on store items was reasonable.

Cons

Everything else. There is very little you could do to convince me to work there ever again. Quite the opposite I've taken my business to PetCo since working there, and will continue to avoid PetSmart and Chewy as the walmart in disguise they are. They are in the midst of taking the company public again, and they're being ridiculously greedy in the process. They have cut hours to the point where even their larger locations are depending on three staff members after about 6pm. One tied to a register, one dealing with fish and small animals, and the manager trying to be customer service for the whole store while trying to get a ridiculous amount of management stuff done. There were weeks where we were given so few hours we couldn't have a cashier until 1pm, so the manager on duty had to handle it. Absolutely ridiculous. All so that they look cheaper to run on paper, so that they can get their grubby paws on some more cash when they sell out. So basically they act like they are a great, charitable, wonderful place, when in fact they are just like walmart. All about the money, all about ensuring they line their pockets from the hard work from below. Classic. Secondarily, the merchandise is cheap junk. I suppose the food is as okay as other foods. But if you knew how many times I damaged out a bag filled with moths that had hatched inside, or had a giant rat-hole in it, you might rethink buying it there. The toys are literal junk that we often had to throw away before we even got it on the shelf. There's not much worth a damn in there. Staff training is a joke. Most of the staff takes a 4 hour long computer course on running a register and greeting customers. Once a month you watch a 3 minute video on something. That's your expertise. Think twice before you trust your petsmart employee to know anything at all... They want you to fall for their "trusted partner" training. It's actually just training on how to get you to trust them. It's not actually training on helping you at all. They say they are safety conscious, but I had a district leader refuse to let me shut down a salon that was 8 degrees above the temperature safety range. I'd literally never allow my animal in that store other than to see the vet he's seen his whole life.
