Pros

I have been fortunate enough to work with and build relationships with many great people. I enjoy going to work everyday because of the people, the facilities, and animal friendly offices are really a plus Work life balance has always been great regardless of when working in a store or in the support center.

Cons

Petco does not do a very good job of valuing employees with tenure or with internal promotions. When working in stores pay is low and annual increases are always very minimal (1-2%). In stores and in the support center, promotional increases have a cap based on %, even if that % increase puts you at less than the minimum for that position. After being moved into higher ranking positions multiple times without a pay increase, I expressed my concerns to my supervisor about what the salary ranges were for my position and I was told that “information could not be disclosed but I am probably making 15-20% less than the minimum.” It is very disheartening to hear that, and then when asked to be raised to the minimum for that role, be told not to ask and to just wait until review time to see if I get brought to the minimum then. Then you hear about new partners being hired into the same or similar roles making 40-50% higher salary after you have been working for the company for over a decade. Why set minimum salaries of what you should be paid to do the job if partners aren’t actually going to be paid that?

Pros

Great company. I love that it's so relaxed and laid back on the day to day level. Most of their animals are really well taken care of.

Cons

First, bettas? Do not belong in bowls. They require a minimum of 2.5 gallons, heated and filtered. Heated! Filtered! This is common knowledge. Second, goldfish need at least 30 gallons each. Both of these fish are listed as needing tank sizes which kill them. And these are listed in Petco's own training videos. Fish are animals too. Second, training. I've worked here for almost four months and have barely been trained because there's no hours set aside for training! Is this a joke? Bring back dedicated training hours. It's no wonder newbies get complained about, even among our coworkers. We don't know how to do anything.

Draining, demoralizing, exhausting

Pros

Bring your pets to work, and great new building. Some of my co-workers are wonderful and very hard working. The pay is comparable if you're coming from outside the company.

Cons

Leadership doesn't care about its people. Everyone is working three people's jobs, no work life balance. No matter how hard you work they will offer no support or acknowledgement of a job well done. Their top priority is the bottom line, even if it's at the expense of the animals, customer, and employees. The HR team is unresponsive and doesn't want to deal with the very obvious low morale in the building. The policies will often change without notice or proper explanation. PTO is laughable and you are expected to be able to respond to emails when you are on PTO. The CEO is very concerned with tiny details and seems to have no eye on the bigger prize. The list goes but my recommendation is to stay away from Petco
