Pros

SLU has really excellent benefits, especially if you want to take courses for free. Healthcare + 403B plan are good too.

Cons

They underpaid me because I don't have a degree and they had to fit me into a job description that maxed out at a low salary. That's why I'm currently looking for a new job. This kind of thing never happens in industry, but is apparently par for the course in academia. They should really be more flexible with this type of thing.

Pros

Great Benefits. Nice people. Beautiful campus. The campus is in an easily accessible area of the city from Vandeventer, Lindell, or Highway 40. That is important for commute times.

Cons

Biondi has done great things for the university financially, but he is secretive and decisions are not explained. The ends are good and the means could be justified, but on the big issues, more transparency would be nice. The metro is not very safe so if you are using that to commute, be careful. It's relatively close to the center of campus, but expect a 10-15 minute walk.

Pros

Good benefits. Small enough you feel like part of a community. I have always had great flexibility in my jobs regarding leave and hours.

Cons

Lack of promotion opportunities for research personnel. You can either be a research assistant or senior research assistant and that's it. Many principal investigators either don't have the funding to offer suitable compensation for senior personnel or are unwilling to do so, preferring to hire cheaper, less experienced staff. If you don't ask for the salary you really want when first hired, It is very difficult to get any kind of significant increase, even with a promotion to senior level research assistant.
