Pros

Best team I've worked with. Fast-growing company means lots of opportunities to contribute and learn.

Cons

You should expect when you come to Scale that this isn't your standard 9-to-5 job, and that's fine. However, especially for those on the supply team who may be put on very intensive projects, they can be expected to put in 80-100 hours per week. Most of these employees are also contractors and not full time employees; without a good support system or benefits, they experience a lot of burnout. Moreover, if you are deciding to work at Scale or not, really dig into your ethics. You should know that Scale, like many other data labeling companies, draws most of its labor from the global South and pays them extremely depressed rates. Internally, I did not feel that Scale cared about these workers at all. They were viewed as truly expendable commodities by upper management. Extreme lack of diversity. I was really happy that recruiting worked hard on recruiting diverse candidates, but if hiring managers don't care about diversity, no change will happen.

Pros

- Stock options that may be worth money if the company IPOs. You could probably get better pay at competitors / other starts up if you are a strong hire. - A job during covid.

Cons

- Abused operations & contractors. Ops and contractors cut 20+ people with with other teams together going through <5 - CEO heavily favors engineering & doesn't engage or listen to ops employees over engineers. Even when many in the company suggest listening to ops more. - No recognition for work hard work - financially, publicly, or status. It doesn't matter what you do, no one will care unless it is top of the CEOs mind or extremely visible. - Similarly, Favoritism culture. - Can't hire senior engineers or senior ops people because management structure in total dis-array. - No investment in employee's careers or skills - All words, Smoke, and mirrors. Same narrative is preached quarter and after quarter, but nothing actually gets better. It's up to employees to work overtime 10a-4am shifts to make their own job better, can't expect support from upper leadership. - Upper leadership will claim it was their success that made the status quo better when they gave no resources and just ask people to grind more to make it better. - No chance of raises or more stock in ops. Financially limited gain. - Low chance of promotion or status upgrade in ops. Limited career mobility. If you have a chance, don't work here. Work at any other company. You'll get trapped here for "stock that might go public" but you'll realize that it isn't worth much in the long run because the company needs to 100x for it to be the opportunity cost somewhere else. - also it's 60+ hour work week minimum with no weekends off.

Pockets of great people, but overall toxic work culture and management

Pros

-There are some really great people at the analyst/mid-level management who are bright, caring, and fun to work with -If you can stick around long enough for your RSUs to vest this company will probably be worth something someday -Base comp is ok

Cons

Where to start? -As other reviewers have mentioned, the CEO's inner circle is the only group empowered to make real decisions. So much politics at the upper level. Intense micromanaging from C-suite execs but done without structure or process = teams are always overworked trying to respond to the latest fire. -Have seen the CEO publicly shame people in meetings: "this is stupid, this is a waste of my time." Affects a great friendly, approachable persona in public but is incredibly mean-spirited and unkind during smaller groups. -Work life balance is a huge issue across all groups at the company. Weekend work + work past 6pm is common, as is responding to/getting slacks at 10pm in the evenings -Recent RIF was completely unanticipated, not done thoughtfully across many groups -Groups often work in silos and cross-functional collaboration is super hard because 1. no clear ownership and 2. only execs are empowered to make the final decisions
