Pros

- Still small enough where management hears the concerns of the little guys. They are constantly updating benefits and trying to make things better for employees. 401k just got increased to 10% match, etc... which is a little unreal. 15 days pto + 10 days in December. $60/per diems. No travel Sunday/Friday... etc I'm sure the other reviews have already hyped this - Good mix of clients both big and small so you still get breadth of knowledge and a variety of experiences w/ different systems - Love the no bs management style. Chris Schellman is very transparent with firm numbers and knows what motivates employees - Very happy with the support for certifications here. They are eager to help employees add those letters after their names and to offer trainings. I really like that most management are all CISAs, CISSPs, because it shows good support for career development and also more competent employees - All expenses paid company party, especially with plus one every year - Management is generally all super cool here and supportive of work life balance. It's rare that they would ask you to turn something around within a business day or anything like that. As long as you stay on top of things, hours worked is very manageable compared to Big 4. More on this in the Cons section...

Cons

- Major con is that unless you are in Tampa, you are working remotely or on your own at the client site the majority of the time. So unless you are really good at managing your own time and staying motivated, it can be easy to fall behind. It's also hard to give up the friendly interaction w/ coworkers at an office and firm happy hrs. They try to make up for it by bringing everyone together with a huge company trip each year which does kind of make up for it - Sometimes the turnaround time is a bit too fast on smaller engagements - especially 1st year clients. Again, it can be easy to fall behind if you are staffed on multiple in a row - Managers can seem a bit stretched here, but with recent waves of new promotions this is hopefully going to get better - Learning program is still pretty young, so there's nothing like 40 hrs of mandatory training like at the Big 4. You also have to manage your own CPEs so if you have a lot of certs it can be a bit cumbersome

Pros

As someone that is very familiar with the employment landscape in this space, I can say that Schellman & Company is absolutely the best workplace for anyone seeking a challenging opportunity in the compliance industry that also values and rewards individual performance. The size of the company makes it very nimble. Not so large that it has the bureaucracy and aloofness of a Big 4 firm. Not so small that it lacks the critical mass to attract top talent or compete for larger clients. Another advantage is that it is employee owned. Unlike certain competitors that have venture capital masters, Schellman is able decisions focused more on quality of service than profitability. Schellman's clients are among the best known companies in the world. Although I cannot mention them here, most people are amazed at the client opportunities to which they are availed through Schellman. Schellman's national focus, as opposed to a local office or regional approach, gives most people far more interesting opportunities than even the Big 4 and large consulting firms can offer. Thankfully, senior management is comprised of the best in the business. They are not dictators seeking to micro-manage. Rather, they are hands on and intimately involved in every project. Personnel generally work in teams based on expertise and/or geography and have specific managers and principals that lead their day-to-day activities. Team members receive feedback and supervision from every single project and are never left on an island to fend for themselves. On a related note, I continue to hear horror stories about other firms allocating personnel a fraction of the time necessary to perform assessments, and some that even assign personnel to multiple assessments in a given week. If you have found yourself in this situation, please know that does NOT happen at Schellman. Project schedules are completed months in advance, principals and managers handle nearly all "advance" work, and with rare exception, auditors are never asked to travel to more than one project location in a given week. I have consistently found that Schellman has the highest total compensation packages in the industry. Combine what with industry leading benefits (Note: be sure to check them out on the website) and you will begin to understand why our employee tenure is so high. Quite frankly, Schellman appears to set the pace in the industry and its demonstrated by how many competitors attempt to follow Schellman's lead. I highly recommend Schellman to anyone seeking to upgrade their career.

Cons

Schellman is a challenging place to work. It's essentially the "pros" of the industry and not everyone is cutout for this level of professional services. I always recommend that job candidates keep this in mind before taking on the challenge.

Thanks so much for the review! We hear you on the project stack. We hope that our new Scheduling System will really take the pressure off your shoulders and make you feel like things are getting more organized and efficient. If you can think of any other ways that you can be made to feel supported, don’t hesitate to share that with your manager or even the People Experience team. We’re excited that the leaders here are resonating with you, too. We work very hard to attract world-class talent to lead our teams because we know just how good the people that drive our mission forward really are. If something is working really well (or even if something could be made better), you should share it with feedback@schellman.com. It’s a direct line that’s viewed by all of the executive leaders at Schellman.
