Pros

I enjoy working with Straight North with a balance of working autonomously (not micromanaged), but with plenty of support when needed. The workflows and SOPs are already in place, so you don't land in a position and then just put in work with no structure. That's always been difficult in similar positions I've had where nothing is tracked and everything is in limbo of accountability. The managers are easy to work with and give both positive reinforcement and direct instructions. They definitely have the employees backs when there needs to be pushback to clients. However we do give everything in scope for clients, so it's usually just keeping the clients aligned with realistic goals. Pay has been competitive since I started and can see clear growth within the company. I've been in the marketing world for 8 years and there are high paying jobs for this experience, but I didn't feel low-balled. Offering health insurance options, 401k matching, and providing equipment (and pretty awesome swag) helped in making up any difference as well.

Cons

There is a lot of work you can walk into the door getting into. If you don't have a lot of experience, it can be overwhelming, but it's a full workload when you are brought on.

Pros

Coworkers were great. Good entry level job for those coming out of college with no other options.

Cons

Ownership cares only about themselves and how much money they make. Starting pay was $22,000 a year when I started at Straight North which is the lowest full-time salary I have ever heard of. I was embarrassed to tell anyone what I made. I bet Straight North responds with something along the lines of "we were transparent during the interview process" but that still doesn't make it right. If you're struggling to find a marking job out of college, Straight North is an ok place to get a foot in the door if you are still living with parents and/or have very low expenses but I highly recommend that you don't stay more than a year or two max. I thought if I worked hard and proved myself that I could earn better compensation but the raises were embarrassing. Due to this i left and made double the pay right away. In addition to embarrassing pay, your career will stagnate here as well. Straight North looks to hire as cheaply as possible which led to overall company stagnation. Most hires are right out of college and the employees who have stayed at Straight North have done the same thing year after year so it's hard to learn anything new after a year or so. I don't think they hired anyone with any relevant work experience (in the digital marketing department) in the entire time I was there. Every hire was right out of college or a former employee coming back.

I’m sorry to hear about your negative experience at Straight North. I appreciate you taking the time to express your feelings about your time with us. I would like to insert that 60% of our staff has been employed with us for over 5 years – we are proud of that! We also pride ourselves on offering competitive wages as well as a supportive, positive work culture. While it’s unfortunate that your experience led to a decision to leave, it’s great that you were able to find a role that better supports your career and compensation needs. I hope your new position offers the growth and opportunity you were seeking. Kindest regards,
