Good admin staff, bad deal for tutors

Pros

-Friendly and helpful staff. Very responsive to all your needs. Regional managers really seem to care about what they do and about the tutors. The other tutors from the company I had to interact with throughout training were not as great... -11-hour training is paid (albeit at your state's minimum wage). -Resources (official ACT and SAT books) are provided free and conveniently sent to you in the mail. StudyPoint also has its own curriculum and lesson plans, which is respectable. -Company is not necessarily glamorous, but is reputable. You get the perks of working "on the books" for a large business, such as having official, documented employment and getting references from managers. This is tougher with freelance. -A good place for young people with no tutoring experience or self-branding skills to start.

Cons

-Extremely low pay ($18-23/hour to start), especially considering tutors are not compensated for travel time and gas costs. Presumably this is because of the costs of marketing, maintaining a support staff, and hiring programmers to build the tutor portal. But considering that all of the overhead and logistical costs are pushed onto the families and the tutors, there is no excuse for StudyPoint to pay so little. Even most of the staff I've spoken with are contractors who work from home, so StudyPoint has streamlined their costs as much as humanly possible and still can't afford to pay tutors a decent wage. They say you can write off gas costs on your taxes as a business expense, but, again, they're just pushing the cost onto someone else. I find it ridiculous that someone in the other review would say that clients pay "top dollar" -Onboarding takes forever, with the 11-hour training, full-length test, additional phone calls with managers, and convoluted payroll signup. I came into StudyPoint as an experienced freelance tutor (300+ hours completed.) I was curious what it would be like to work for a company, and was finding it difficult to find clients on my own at the time. But I can tell you right now that this is NOT a company for experienced and capable tutors. If don't have your BA yet and need some work in the summer, it's fine. But if you have any tutoring experience, a degree from a decent school, and can set up a basic profile for yourself, you are better off either looking for freelance jobs online (WyZant, Care.com, or even Craigslist) and putting together a roster of clients, or working for a smaller educational company that has higher hiring standards but will pay $35-40/hour.

Thank you for your candid feedback. Over the past year, we have moved to a new hiring and pay structure that better compensates candidates for their credentials and experience. Keep in mind that StudyPoint's program managers and tutors are employees, not contractors. Though some other tutoring organizations may pay more, in many cases, you will be a contractor, which means you are responsible for all payroll taxes (which can be significant), and can't receive training, instructional materials, or ongoing support from that organization. Because StudyPoint's tutors are employees, we pay our portion of your payroll taxes, we can (and do) provide you with training and curriculum, and we also provide you with ongoing support. These differences are part of the reason we have so many talented veteran tutors on our team. That being said, we want to make sure we are continuing to address our tutors' needs, so we thank you for this feedback. Best, Greg President & Co-Founder

Pros

Good training, online, with helpful materials from the company and beyond. Very helpful program managers with positive, friendly attitudes. Never afraid to ask questions or voice concerns. Great job for someone with a college degree who needs to make a little extra money and needs a flexible schedule! Great hourly pay and good students/families. So much flexibility!

Cons

I would have liked to be assigned more students, but unfortunately I never was able to tutor more than 6-8 hours a week. Not a lot of room to grow within the company.

We appreciate the feedback! There are a number of factors that impact how many assignments and hours a tutor receives (subject, location, schedule, student's needs, etc.). I will share this feedback with our recruiting team so we can set appropriate expectations with tutors. Thanks! Best, Greg President & Co-Founder
