Pros

Can bring your dog to work Shares after a certain amount of time Free breakfast and snacks Friday beers

Cons

Pay low compared to other start ups (who Tails constantly compare themselves and their customer service too, but refuse to match salaries) Bulling and favouritism by upper management rife Very strong bullying culture which is completely ignored and not addressed no matter how many complaints Discrimination against anyone with any kind of issue or illness Heavy blame culture Forced sense of fake 'culture' where you are penalised for not joining and have permanent marks left on your performance review if you choose not that join in 'optional' activities Total lack of regard for staff well-being Happy to let customers be racist, homophobic, xenophobic as long as they are 'happy' and company is making money Zero support of staff when it comes to abusive customers Lack of HR while i was there (although i believe this has now been addressed) No career progression unless you are friends with management or threaten to quit

Tails.com Response

Thank you for your feedback. I’m genuinely upset to hear that this is how you feel about your time at tails.com. We are passionate about our “team spirited” value, and we’re proud to have low turnover and high Net Promoter Score (NPS, 75 across tails.com and 80 in Customer Experience team, Oct 2017). Weekly meetings with your manager and our open, flat structure should have helped you feel supported, able to thrive and develop. We try to make sure that feedback is given in a supportive way, along with advice on how to excel at tails.com. We value our employees as much as our customers which means that we don’t tolerate any abusive behaviour. I’m really sorry to hear that you didn’t feel that support. Our sickness policy is applied to all health issues, including mental health, that any of our team is unfortunate enough to experience. We try to be as flexible as possible when helping our employees recover from illness, often allowing flexible hours or home working if that is what is recommended by your doctor. We’d never want our teams to feel that events, socials and activities were an obligation rather than our commitment to team engagement or spontaneous friendly get togethers. Once again, thanks for your feedback. If you would like to share more, please feel free to reach out to me. Kind regards, Henrik Malmquist, Head of People at tails.com

Heed the recent reviews - not just disgruntled ex-employees

Pros

Tails still has some amazing people, although they seem to be losing a lot of them very quickly. I have never (before or since) worked with so many intelligent and highly capable people as I did at tails.

Cons

As a lot of the amazing people I worked with were still very happy at Tails.com when I left, I decided not to bother leaving a review and put my experience down to personal outlook. However, sadly it seems a lot of the concerns I had back then have only worsened. Tails used to be incredibly customer-centric. We worked on features and changes that came from data and feedback. The team cared about the dogs and customers we served above everything else. Our commercial goals always started with 'What do customers want and need' and then led to how we could monetise or relate to revenue. My understanding from what I've heard from former colleagues (both who have left and who still work there) is that this mentality has totally disappeared. There was a point where, to me, the company's outlook shifted very dramatically. The passion for our customers and dogs was gone and, to me, it felt like profit suddenly became the driving force behind everything, often in spite of our customers' wants and needs, such as relentless the price rises. Regarding the company culture, as others have mentioned, there were already back then some very shady promotions, disappearances and rumours of sexual misconduct and bullying. The reason I'm writing this review now is because I think it's important that these recent reviews aren't just written off as collateral damage from the recent redundancies. Many of the negatives others have highlighted have been years in the making and were central to my decision to depart from the company long before these redundancies happened.

A waste of time

Pros

On paper Tails are doing things to support a positive culture. 9-day fortnight, living wage across all staff, dog-friendly office, remote working. The chaos of working for Tails brings you close to your colleagues and I met some brilliant and talented people.

Cons

Disregard for employee well-being when it comes to excessive workloads. Blame culture when unrealistic targets, that are set without necessary input, are not hit. No consistency of teams to allow people to settle into roles and perform their best work. Reluctance to pay for the tools you actually need to do your job. Waning values around dog nutrition and health - decisions made to prioritise short-term financial gain rather than customer needs. Bullying and discrimination rife, from leadership level right the way through the organisation. Total absence of progression. Tails stifled my career rather than benefitted it. Painfully lacking diversity and no appetite to improve this. Strategy becoming increasingly corporate with a top-down approach set by the CEO. “Shout the loudest” culture, for the few promotions that do happen and for prioritisation of business activities. Favouritism playing a big role. Pay and job role levelling far behind industry benchmarking, which paired with lack of progression and lack of L&D makes Tails a leech on your CV.
