Pros

You do get a bunch of nice closes that that tell you are free but you end up paying for them from each pay check

Cons

I hope you're comfortable stopping strangers on the street and asking them for their phone number because that is a huge part of the job. The hours are demanding (7am-7pm M-F). The compensation is poor. And management is incompetent. They want you to give up your life for this job so if you have a significant other or family you can forget about spending time with them because the job comes first.

Pros

Meet great people and friends

Cons

This job is a complete pyramid scheme. They have you work 80+ hours a week just to scrape by and make you feel guilty for working any less. They compare it to starting out as a doctor or lawyer when in actuality, you're selling overpriced clothing. They work new people to the bone and make money off of what you sell when they do nothing. What is even worse is that when you leave, they delete all of your contacts, take all of your clients for their own, and refuse to give you your final paycheck. While you're working your butt off, they're off vacationing and traveling because they make more money from YOU than they do from their own sales. They tell you to stay and that it will get better only because their pyramid scheme guarantees it with the insanely high turnover rate at this job. If you like harassing your friends to buy things from you, stealing others' business, and making people feel guilty for having a life then stick around - this job is for you.

Pros

You learn to appreciate any job after this bc this one is so terrible

Cons

This was the most toxic work environment you could possibly imagine. “Leaders” constantly put down their direct report, my leader encouraged me to hit on men in the streets to try to get business, pyramid scheme like office structure, as a new “partner” you’re expected to work 7a-7p MINIMUM, you get indebted to the company bc you are on a draw and some leaders require you order Tom James clothing which costs a fortune that they then deduct from your paycheck (which by the way never even fit correctly and went straight in the trash after I quit), they require current employees to write positive reviews that’s where there are so many, it’s a fallacy this place is completely toxic

Tom James Company Response
4y
Thanks so much for taking the time to give us feedback. I am sorry to hear your experience at Tom James was a negative one. We appreciate you expressing your concerns and bringing this to our attention. We want you to know that Tom James values your review and takes all comments into consideration. We take these type of allegations very seriously. There are comments in this that don’t align with the published opportunity or company practices. We would need to speak with you to understand your perspective better to respond. Please email us careerdivision@tomjames.com so that we may address these as soon as possible. Without being argumentative, we do like to take the opportunity when relevant to point out to any potential readers feedback that is factually incorrect. While we appreciate feedback of any variety, it's also important to be factual: - We do not expect 60+ hour work weeks from our new partners. In general, this isn't our management style. It is TRUE that many of the people we attract choose to work very hard in their first years of building their clientele. Our belief is that if we help people develop goals for the life they want to build, and help them develop an activity plan to accomplish those goals, they'll use both their work ethic and their efficiency/creativity to figure out how to achieve them on a monthly basis. While it does take hard work to get your business off the ground here, it is not our culture to enforce a specific hourly requirement. - On the pyramid scheme allegation, we do need to point out that both claims are categorically false. It is explicitly stated in our employee agreement that employees are not required to wear our products. Additionally, no leader receives pay from their team members' commissions. Period. That is just not true. Leaders DO earn leadership pay commensurate with the overall sales volume of their team, but in no way, shape or form does this pay come out of their team members' earnings. -It is categorically untrue that we require anyone to write reviews of our company. So while we appreciate the feedback in general, we did want to point out the distinctions here for any other job seekers who may want a balanced and factual perspective on our employment structure. We wish you the best in your future endeavors.
