Dropping like flies

Pros

Great employees, good compensation, beautiful environment, holiday hours can NOT be beat, time and a half on Sunday.

Cons

Complete double standards; if they think you are a "golden child" you can get away with anything. If you make too high of a salary they will use any reason to get you out. We have, and still are, loosing so many great employees that it's crazy. The job market is bad, but not at VM because all the good employees are leaving and finding great positions elsewhere. One person covering 3 departments is insane, and we are still expected to clean up all departments and leave it beautiful for the morning crew. Management changes expectations at the drop of a hat, just so they can write you up, and force you out. Management spends more time talking to eachother, and playing around, then helping on the sales floor. No training for floor managers, or department managers; they are just expected to learn on the fly. They only promote people that have the Von Maur "look"; most floor managers, and store managers are in their 20's. Everything is scripted with management.

Pros

Decent compensation, holiday hours do not change from regular hours, Sundays are considered holiday pay,

Cons

Management is poor, they are more concerned with dress code (women must wear skirts, panty hose, and long sleeves) than actual performance; they would rather speak to you about what wearing than howto improve sales. Management will also lead you to believe you will get promoted but never promote. You are unable to have more than one Saturday/Sunday off per month, no matter what the circumstances. Quick turnover leads to constant under staffing.

Incompetent Management

Pros

They offer a good pay base and benefits compared to most places in the retail industry. I liked most of my co-workers. They promote from within.

Cons

Women are required to wear skirts or dresses and hosiery and that is just for starters. Management tends to be very incompetent, and I was always surprised by the people they decided to promote. The company seemed to promote people who were unqualified, perhaps to make more senior management seem more competent. It was just a very frustrating company to work for.
