Pros

While the company encourages establishing relationships with the staff and residents (see cons)....

Cons

It actually ends up being very painful in the end when you inevitably can’t put up with the BS from management and you have to quit to maintain your own sanity.

We're listening and we're working - all the time - to do the right thing. We've implemented a new culture project team to do even more. And, one of the things we know we need to do is increase our ability to get better, more timely feedback in a variety of formats from team members across the organization. We're working on it. And we appreciate the feedback that has allowed us to "get real" about what we need to do differently and better.

Pros

The residents, focus on health, some of the communities are nice.

Cons

The company appears to be making attempts at changing the culture to improve morale and avoiding turnover, but when the bad apples are still given manager and leader roles, there is no incentive for them to change their behavior. They may be great at their job, but they are terrible with people. That will never work. There are a lot of demands on nursing staff that never seem to end or improve. Things change so fast you never really feel there is a standard process. Give the employees a little slack and stop pushing so hard. Celebrate success and victories. The pressure put on employees is too much. I just don't enjoy working here with all the negativity.

Pros

First and foremost the residents. Helping them to make Wesley their home in whatever way possible, which gives one a sense of purpose.

Cons

Employee retention is awful. Especially management. In one location alone, the E.D. has changed at least 4 times within 5 years, the Administrator changed at least 6 times in 5 years, and the DON changed at least 8 times in 5 years. This led to some staff being retained even when they shouldn't have, only because the person in charge of those people didn't know the history of the problem staff members. Management fills in staffing gaps with agency people who really don't care to be there. I know numerous residents who were treated poorly by agency staff. Housekeeping, laundry, and CNA's are the employees who are treated the worst. But without them, the place wouldn't be able to run, literally. Management and upper management supposedly care about their employees, but actions speak louder than words. If you have the courage to report issues, a target is placed on your back. Most people just put their head down, pretend that they can't see what's going on, don't offer an opinion, do their job and go home. No pride taken in their work though.

Your advice is critical for us and taken to heart. Obviously, we know about the location you are referring to in your comments. We are as concerned about the turnover and issues at that campus as everyone else is and have spent a considerable amount of time working to resolve what we see as the root causes. The team members are a primary concern for us. We are listening in a variety of ways and making the changes we know we need to make. Leadership is key and we are having those right conversations, as well. The CEO has been a visible presence at that location several times in recent months. The RVP of Operations has been working almost full time with the team and visible on site. Our corporate clinical team members have been camped in the health center for months working with the nursing team directly to get our processes and systems back in place. And, our corporate People and Culture Director has been there for many weeks working with the leaders and the team to uncover and resolve many of the staffing concerns that have been identified. So, there has been a lot of presence and activity directed toward this site. We're working on it!! We've seen some improvement. But we won't stop - and we'll continue to work until this site is back to its original place of pride and excellence!
