Pros

Experience of Correctional healthcare, the environment, and its limitations. Certainly not the pay nor benefits, even the healthcare plans are no better than Medicaid, for finding accepting providers and definitely not the prescription drug coverage

Cons

Way too much work and a severe lack of staffing in numbers and employees for the size facility. Management is always stabbing you in the back, plus they tend to hire family or extended family to spy on the rest of the crew. Even the DON is powerless under the HSA.

I’m sorry your experience with Corizon wasn’t a more positive one. I want to address your comment on the healthcare benefits. Due to the size of our organization, we are part of a healthcare exchange. This allows our employees to choose from up to five different medical carriers (Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, United Health Care, Kaiser and Cigna) and four different levels of coverage. I can’t say that I’ve ever heard of someone having issues finding accepting providers. There are most certainly locations with a stronger presence than others, which is why we offer up the multiple choices. Employees have access to a tool allowing them to verify that their providers are part of the various networks, prior to having to select a plan. I’m not sure if you used that tool upon enrollment, but do think it’s noteworthy to mention the tool is out there. I just reviewed the staffing levels for nursing at this particular site, and it appears we have a couple of active LPN searches but are actually overstaffed on RNs at this time. Recruiting for the corrections environment is certainly not without its challenges, but we have a dedicated recruiter focused on making sure we meet our contractual staffing levels. As it pertains to the management issues you’ve outlined, should any staff member feel like they cannot turn to their DON or HSA, we’d expect staff to utilize their chain of command, by taking it to their Director of Operations. We also have a compliance line that employees can use, should they wish to remain anonymous, in reporting any issues in the field. I can certainly share your concerns with the Employee Relations rep for this site, in the event there are other staff members, still onsite, that may feel the same. Best of luck going forward. Glad to hear you like the people you work with and the environment. As it pertains to staffing and pay rates… we certainly try to stay market competitive to ensure we can recruit staff in to our facilities. We’ve recently done rate reviews/market analysis in several of our larger statewide systems, and are in the process of implementing increases in several cases. Without knowing what site/contract you are working, I can’t say for certain if this will impact your facility. Our long term goal is to lower turnover, and we realize, there is more to job satisfaction than just pay. That said, if people are leaving because our rates are off, we’d most certainly want to review that. If you haven’t already done so, please elevate your concerns to site management. Or, if it’s less awkward, you can certainly contact me directly at 314.919.9506. I am happy to elevate your concerns to the compensation department. Just need a few specifics to make this happen. Sincerely, Courtney Penning Director of Talent Acquisition

Pros

Work with you on scheduling, decent pay

Cons

Have no use for LPN's except as med mules. Want only RN's which is more expensive and have no concept of what LPN's can actually do under RN supervision/collaboration. LPN's don't even call the doctor....has to be an RN. Never heard of this.

This is really interesting feedback. We are seeing a shift in the overall healthcare world from LPN/RN mixed model to many hospitals only hiring RNs. Last week on a recent visit to several of our Indiana sites, I spoke with lots of LPNs who were pleased with the correctional environment because it allowed them to utilize a full gamut of their skills vs. just “passing meds.” Each site runs very differently, so I don’t doubt that this is your personal experience, it’s just so different than what I’ve heard from the LPNs I’ve encountered. Our contracts are structured so that it is dictated how many RNs and how many LPNs we have on staff. The only time we’d hire an RN in place of an LPN, is if we are experiencing an LPN shortage in a particular geographic area. If patient care could be jeopardized by us not being able to fulfill our contractual hours, we would “overhire” to offset this. Our nurses, both LPNs and RNs, are the backbone of the company. I’m sorry you don’t feel your skills are being utilized to their fullest. If you haven’t already done so, I’d encourage you to reach out to your DON and HSA and let them know! If you have already done so, and don’t see a change, work up the chain to your regional leader. There’s always plenty of work to go around, so I hate to think you are not happy with what you are being assigned. Sincerely, Courtney Penning, Director of Talent Acquisition
