Pros
Nearmap leadership is very much focused on pushing innovation in their technology and product offerings. Particularly in acquiring a SaaS company/product for insurance, continually advancing their AI capabilities, and expanding their aerial imagery capture program. There a lot of Nearmap people who care about the quality and impact of their work.
Cons
The company has many disparate processes, and leaders—primarily management below the C-Suite—hold varying opinions on how we should operate, and serve as blockers to the work. As a result, departments and employees often work in silos, complicating the execution of even simple tasks. Frequently, tasks that should be straightforward become arduous, and obtaining the necessary support can be challenging. While not universally the case, some individuals at Nearmap lack either the access rights, leadership support, or skills necessary to be effective "doers" - this also prevents employees from getting the help they need. This often leaves you to solve problems independently without support, and with success limited to your ability to even access what you need to fix a problem. To that point, there are lot of Nearmap people who want to voice opinions, but not actually lead an initiative or do the work. It's a difference between "talkers" and "doers." (I'm not referring to management vs. individual contributors because both can fill those roles) Many are happy to talk, not understand their tools, and then outsource the legwork to an agency or simply delegate work to employees. There are limited opportunities for career advancement unless a position becomes vacant. Until recently, there has been minimal process or transparency regarding career progression at Nearmap. Some of the company values are "Tell it" and "Risk it" but I don't believe it's a true part of our culture. When you want to try new things, tweak processes, or suggest different paths forward to help the business grow and innovate, you're often met with simple negativity such as "No," "that won't work," and "we've never done that before." The goal should't be "no" for it's own sake, but finding the best solution to any given issue. Tensions often arise between the business operations in Australia and the US, particularly regarding creative or direct control. These conflicts are frequently exacerbated by internal politics. It's all very frustrating.
