As we head into Labor Day weekend, it's important to reflect on how the journey for this holiday really began... Labor Day came about after an era of expectation for working long, grueling work days with 12 hour shifts and seven-day work weeks right at the peak of the Industrial Revolution. Despite the long hours, workers would hardly earn enough to meet their basic needs. Not only did adults face difficult working conditions, but many young children, as young as 5 and 6 years old, did too, despite state restrictions. These children would work in mines, factories and mills and earn a very small fraction of adult wages. Many individuals, especially immigrants and the very poor, worked in unfit working conditions with not enough access to fresh air, breaks and bathroom facilities.

Did you know that Friday, August 13th is International Lefthanders Day❔ This is a day organized to both celebrate left-handedness, but also to raise awareness on the advantages and challenges faced by lefthanders living in a world very much designed for right-handedness. This holiday is celebrated across the world with various events, such as right vs. left-handed sports matches and a left-handed tea party. Typically on this day, right-handers will try out objects meant for every day left-handed use to be able to relate to an every day lefthander's experience. This awareness has led to the start of enhanced product design to better accommodate the left-handed community. In support of this mission and to ensure that all individuals were aware of various developments, a group called the Left-Handers Club originated back in 1990. This group would gather to make their views known to manufacturing companies, but to also promote research into left-handedness for the production of more left-handed objects.
