Pride month is celebrated every year in June to honor the Stonewall Uprising, to recognize those who have been lost to hate crimes, HIV/AIDs, to recognize the impact of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals on history across the country and world, and also to achieve equal opportunity for LGBTQ Americans. The 1969 Stonewall Uprising in Manhattan set historical precedence for the gay rights movement in the United States, as well as around the world. On the morning of June 28th, 1969, the New York City police raided the Stonewall Inn, a gay club located right in the city. The raid turned into a riot between bar patrons and the community as police abruptly attempted to haul individuals from the bar. What started as a bar raid quickly turned into a 6 day-long protest with several violent incidents happening around the neighborhood of Christopher Street and Christopher Park. Did you know? 1. Chicago – 1924: is the birthplace of the first documented U.S. gay rights organization, the Society for Human Rights. This organization was founded by Henry Gerber, a German immigr

This Memorial Day weekend, be sure to honor those who have served, continue to serve and all affected family members. Did you know that wearing a red poppy on Memorial Day started with a poem for WWI? The poem was written by Canadian Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, a brigade surgeon for an Allied artillery unit. He was inspired to write this poem when he noticed red poppies emerging in battle land within Belgium, something bright standing out within battle-ridden territory. He titled his poem, "In Flanders Field," giving voice to the soldiers killed in battle, laying beneath the poppy-covered grounds. The poem goes: In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie, In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who di

Did you know that May is Older American's Month? This dates back to the early 1960s, a time where a third of this community (amongst 17 million living Americans age 65 or above) were living in poverty, without enough support to meet their basic needs. In 1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson passed the Older Americans Act of 1965 to declare the month of May as Older American's month and to raise awareness and community support. The Administration of Aging then originated, addressing issues such as transportation assistance, nutrition programs, federally funded adult day care, legal assistance, prevention for abuse and neglect, and more. With these conversations, Medicare emerged. Each year, the Administration for Community Living chooses a theme for Older American's month, and this year is "Communities of Strength." This is to recognize how older adults have built substantial strength and resilience through their hardships faced, which are stories embraced and admired by the community.

The history of Mental Health Awareness starts in the early 1900s with Clifford W. Beers. Clifford had recently graduated from Yale University, started working on Wall Street and lost his brother, when he experienced his first manic episode. Beers jumped out of a third story window and was critically injured. For the following three years he stayed in both public and private hospitals in Connecticut where he experienced the cruel treatment that unfortunately many struggling with mental health issues had also been experiencing. One time, Clifford was left a in straightjacket for 21 nights... When Clifford was eventually released, he wanted to expose this cruelty, so he started by publishing an autobiography, A Mind That Found Itself. Beers faced his illness straight on, as he shared: As I penetrated and conquered the mysteries of that dark side of my life, it no longer held any terror for me. I have decided to stand on my past and look the future in the face. Following this, Beers partnered with Philosopher, William James, and Psychiatrist, Adolf Meyer, by founding the National Co
