Do you know what one of the best parts about being a part of the Philadelphia Phillies family is? Baking the cake for the Phillie Phanatic's 45th birthday party! Last month, our talented bakery team members participated in a birthday cake decorating contest where they were tasked with showcasing the magic of the Philadelphia Phillies' Citizen's Bank Park. After a vote on social media, Andrea Gana, cake decorator at the GIANT in Yardley, Pa., earned top honors, and her cake took the field for the Phillie Phanatic's birthday festivities on April 23. "Being part of the contest has been an adventure! It's a unique experience and opportunity, and to be able to say I have made the Phillie Phanatic's birthday cake is so exciting," said Gana. "I have worked at The GIANT Company since 1987 and have been in the bakery department for the last few years, where I took up decorating again. I hope more cake decorators take chances to showcase their work – they may even get a chance to enjoy the day at the ballpark!" Congratulations, Andrea - you knocked it out of the park with this design!
Today is #StopFoodWasteDay, and with the help of our Spring Garden Street store team in Carlisle, Pa., we're proud to announce that our partnership with Flashfood has diverted six million pounds of food from landfills since May 2020. Food waste accounts for nearly one-third of global emissions. The GIANT Company’s collaboration with Flashfood has saved more than 10 million pounds of greenhouse gas emissions from being released into the atmosphere while providing customers with savings. Shoppers utilizing the Flashfood app save up to 50% off high-quality foods nearing their best-by dates. That's a win for the planet and our customers. "At The GIANT Company, we’re constantly seeking out ways to deliver on our purpose and do our part to heal the planet, and teaming up with Flashfood has helped us do both,” said John Ruane, interim president, The GIANT Company.
At The GIANT Company, we believe in celebrating our differences and building a more inclusive world through acceptance. We recognize barriers still exist for our neurodiverse team members and customers and are working to build empathy, acceptance, and inclusivity for all. This month, our Barrier Free Business Resource Group volunteered with two Pennsylvania organizations, the Autism Cares Foundation and Camp Victory. Both focus on empowering, educating, and supporting people with autism, different abilities, and their families. We're also donating a total of $10,000 to organizations growing Autism acceptance across our footprint. Funds will benefit the Hanover Area Little League, Aaron's Acres, Bournelyf Special Camp, The Arc of Chester County, Shenandoah University, and Variety, the Children's Charity's.
Today, we welcomed more than 100 of our local suppliers to our Carlisle Support Office for our annual Local Growers Meeting, bringing together regional farmers to highlight business and marketing initiatives for the upcoming produce season. For The GIANT Company, local is so much more than a mile radius. It is investing in local farmers and growers. It is growing local economies and family businesses. It is connecting consumers to those who produce their food. And it is a commitment to quality that is second to none. To all of our local partners, thank you. Each of you is critical to helping us deliver our customer promises, and together, we are connecting families for a better future.
Just in time for spring holiday celebrations, The GIANT Company is donating nearly 4,000 hams, turkeys, and chickens - almost 30,000 pounds of protein - to our partner food banks and food pantries to ensure every family can gather around the table, share a meal, and create memories. Thank you to all of our team members for delivering the donations and volunteering their time and to our partners for all they do to help feed neighbors in need.
For today’s Meet a Team Member Monday, say hello to Taneya Clark, bakery category manager for The GIANT Company. Her career with us began in 1989 when she joined as a part-time deli team member. Throughout her more than 30 years with the company, Taneya has grown through several new opportunities, from assistant deli manager to deli manager, field specialist, and sales manager, before being named to her current role in 2017. Taneya works closely with her team to research new, fun, and exciting products or flavor profiles for customers to experience. Though she doesn’t have a favorite item, she enjoys the process of choosing the products sold in stores. With customers in mind, she focuses on taste, appearance, packaging, and cost. Taneya strives to meet all customers’ needs, from bread, rolls, breakfast, and desserts to gluten-free and vegan products, while managing pricing, promotion, profits, and strategy. Taneya finds joy in finding new products for customers, sharing that it’s her favorite part of her day-to-day job. Taneya, thank you for always putting our customers first!
Have you ever wondered what working in one of our stores is like? FOX43's Tyler Hatfield did, so he recently joined the team at the GIANT in Enola, Pa., for his segment Tyler Tries It. He spent the day learning more about the important roles our team members fulfill each and every day as they care for our customers. See how he did in the video below. "It takes a team," said Craig Forbes, store manager. "Our team members are active, engaged, and customer-focused. Working in-store encompasses a lot of pieces moving at once, but our teams are talented. They work together, and they build lifelong friendships along the way." Great job, Tyler, and thank you for highlighting one of The GIANT Company's many talented teams!

International Women's Day is a time to celebrate women everywhere, especially all of the women on The GIANT Company team. The theme of #IWD2023 is #EmbraceEquity. For The GIANT Company , equity is a must-have, and it's up to each of us to do our part to create a more equitable and inclusive tomorrow for all. Today, team members across the company are wearing purple, the official color of #InternationalWomensDay. In our stores, we're supporting local organizations that support women by selling special bouquets and cupcakes. We also hosted a special event at our Support Office, where we shared experiences, learned about equity and equality, inspired one another never to give up or give in, and recommitted to breaking barriers together.
