In honor of #HispanicHeritageMonth, we'd like to dedicate this Meet a Team Member Monday to one of our tenured team members, Maribel Ortiz. She is the assistant store manager of customer experience at the Exton, Pa., GIANT, and has been with The GIANT Company since 1993. Reflecting on Hispanic Heritage Month and why it is important to her, Maribel shares, "It is important to me because we have a beautiful story to tell. When it comes down to it, we all have a story to tell regardless of our background. It's the story of my family, it's what brings us closer together, and it's our responsibility to teach our kids and their kids that family is everything."
We're honored to highlight a few of our Hispanic-owned business partners during #HispanicHeritageMonth. In 1988, founder and president of Ole Mexican Foods Inc. Veronica Moreno began making and selling tortillas using traditional ingredients and techniques passed down to her through generations from her native Mexico. Veronica, her family, and her staff have never lost sight of the importance of creating great foods that bring families together at the table. José "Pepe" Badía started the company over 50 years ago. Today, Badia Spices, Inc. manufactures, packages, and distributes spices, seasoning blends, marinades, sauces, teas, health items, and other products to more than 70 countries worldwide. Starting with a small bakery in downtown Ponce, Puerto Rico, over 90 years ago, the family-owned Rovira Biscuit Corporation remains dedicated to producing Hispanic food favorites such as all-natural soda crackers and doing it for a cleaner lifestyle. Today, Frances Rovira Vecchini is helping the 4th generation family business bring new and exciting product ideas to customers.

Back by popular demand, our 2nd Annual GIANT Grocery Grab! As part of our 30 Days of Action for #HungerActionMonth, this event, hosted at the Linglestown Road GIANT in Harrisburg, brings together team members, community partners, and state officials to raise awareness about hunger in Central Pennsylvania. Putting the 'fun" in fundraising, participants went head to head in a round of trivia and a fast-paced shop through store aisles, filling their carts to raise funds for their local hunger relief organization. In addition, our generous supplier partners Gourmet Foods International and Tyson Foods provided chances to win bonus donations during the game. In the end, Tom Hunter, food program manager at New Hope Ministries, South Central PA, and Felice Cruz, GIANT deli manager, took home the Golden Shopping Cart. And best of all, each of our food bank partners - Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, Project SHARE, New Hope Ministries, and York County Food Bank - were surprised with a $15,000 donation to support their efforts to feed local families.
Located at 30 N 23rd St., between Arch St. and Market St., a city wall has been transformed into a breathtaking masterpiece. The People's Harvest, Philadelphia's newest mural, was unveiled earlier this week by The GIANT Company and Mural Arts Philadelphia. The 4,000 square-foot permanent mural, designed by Belize-born artist and founding member of the Amber Art and Design Ernel Martinez, explores the intersection of food justice and racial justice. Food, and the act of gathering for a meal, is much more than just a way to stay nourished; it can also be a cultural resource that brings people together and inspires large-scale social change and transformation. "We are honored to have had the chance to work with Mural Arts on this special project that highlights the connection between food and diversity. It's incredibly exciting to see the culmination of Ernel's work over the past several months," said Jennifer Heinzen Krueger, vice president of team experience for The GIANT Company.
At The GIANT Company, we believe that our differences, traditions, and heritages make each of us unique. During #NationalHispanicHeritageMonth, we proudly celebrate the Hispanic Americans who have enriched our culture and communities and those who will continue to do so tomorrow and beyond. From now through October 15, follow along as we share stories honoring our Hispanic team members, suppliers, and community partners.
#NationalTruckDriverAppreciationWeek is the perfect time to celebrate and thank our nearly 400 drivers for their hard work and all they do to keep our business moving! Truck drivers are one of the cornerstones of our industry, and at The GIANT Company, our drivers play a crucial role in bringing our purpose of connecting families for a better future to life. Every day, 365 days a year, our distribution center drivers keep store shelves stocked, and our GIANT Direct drivers go the extra mile to bring groceries straight to our customers’ doors. There’s no team of drivers quite like ours! If you see one of our truck drivers this week - or any week - please give them a warm thank you for their service to our stores, customers, and communities.
