ICYMI: Last month, we joined Founder and CEO of The Bridge Eco-Village Garry M. Gilliam Jr., Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf, and First Lady Frances Wolf at the unveiling of the GIANT Bleacher Garden. The garden, located at the old Bishop McDevitt High School in Harrisburg, will provide more than 100 families with nutritious, local produce while helping to convert the city from a food desert into a food oasis. "Each growing season, the GIANT Bleacher Garden's harvest will serve as a tangible symbol of our purpose, connecting families for a better future," said Glennis Harris, senior vice president of customer experience. "The GIANT Company is proud to be a part of this incredible project to help eliminate hunger, heal our planet, and create a better tomorrow for the community."

We're winding down our celebration of #AsianPacificAmericanHeritageMonth with a spotlight on National Minority Supplier Development Council (NMSDCHQ) certified and Asian-owned brand Sun Tropics Inc. Sun Tropics is a family-owned company committed to transforming global childhood favorites and authentic street food into shareable snacks with adventurous flavors. Founders Ashley Lao and Sharon Sy created the company in 2002 in response to the lack of natural tropical fruit products that originated from real fruit rather than artificial flavors. The company’s CocoRolls are inspired by traditional rolled pancakes sold from pushcarts in Thailand. With a crisp, flaky twist, CocoRolls pair well with coffee and can easily be added to ice cream or yogurt, with flavors like original, caramel, and espresso.

Recently, The GIANT Company President Nicholas Bertram delivered the commencement address to Harrisburg University of Science and Technology's Class of 2022 (and the Classes of 2021 and 2020). Speaking to over 1,000 graduates and their families and friends, he wished them a life full of meaning and joy, offering the following advice as they embark on their next chapter: "I encourage you to be true to yourself, your values, and your convictions. Think about something greater than you and commit to that. Treasure others beyond yourself. Look out for those who are disadvantaged and marginalized and defend them and encourage them. Remember, you are the only person who can ever do whatever it is you were created to do. Don't doubt your potential or purpose; chase it with passion, and give your very best. Today is almost over, but tomorrow is wide open. It is unwritten, and it has the potential to be absolutely amazing." Congratulations, graduates!
Serving up a GIANT Thank You!
Today, we're shining a light on one of our favorite Asian-owned brands, Dang Foods, as we continue to recognize the historical and cultural contributions from AAPI communities during #AsianPacificAmericanHeritageMonth. As brothers living between NYC and Bangkok, Vincent and Andrew Kitirattragarn grew up eating differently. Inspired by their heritage, they created Dang Foods, named after their mom, to share uniquely Asian-American snacks with the flavors and ingredients they love. In honor of #AsianPacificAmericanHeritageMonth, we dedicate this Meet a Team Member Monday to Reiko Herchenroeder, assistant manager of customer experience at our Bartonsville, PA GIANT. Born in Hiroshima, Japan, in the 1970s, Reiko always dreamed of coming to America, and when she did 13 years ago, she started her career at The GIANT Company as a cashier. There was a major language barrier, but Reiko worked hard to learn English. She credits The GIANT Company for staying true to its team member promise, Be You, by encouraging a culture of inclusion and belonging where everyone is respected, valued, heard, and welcomed just the way they are. Reiko says her biggest accomplishment was learning English. “I was born and raised in Japan for 27 years, and when I moved to America, I only knew a few English words. I challenged myself to learn more,” Reiko said. “The GIANT Company allowed me to challenge myself, and I became an assistant store manager last year. My goal is to keep going, and I am looking forward to seeing how far I’ve come in the future.”
