As we countdown to Earth Day, today's Meet A Team Member Monday highlights John Primus, whose passion for the environment inspires us every day! Joining our bakery team at 16 years old, John has enjoyed growing through new opportunities at The GIANT Company. He is now the assistant store manager of fresh, overseeing all perishable departments at GIANT in Norristown, PA, so it's no wonder our work to heal the planet resonates with John. "I am so passionate about healing the planet because it takes little to no effort to do so. By reusing, donating, and recycling, we can really make a difference and make the world a better place. When asked if he had any advice for someone trying to reduce their environmental footprint, John said, "The advice I give to everyone is to simply start looking for small changes at home. Are you recycling that toilet paper roll, or is it going in the trash? The plastic container that poultry comes in, are you rinsing it out and recycling? These are few simple things that can help the environment."
Congratulations to Emily Mikus, Aaysha Noor, and Ashley Flower for being named 2021 Women of Influence in the Food Industry by The Griffin Report. Honorees are chosen for their highly visible contributions, dedication and professionalism, their tenacity and leadership skills, and their willingness to encourage and mentor other women in the grocery industry. As the Director for Loyalty and Shopper Marketing, Emily's persistence and resiliency during the COVID-19 pandemic made it possible for customers to take advantage of the value they earned, delivering customer loyalty and contributing to successful business results. With courage and compassion, Aaysha, our Head of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, led our company through a historic period of civil unrest, turning a challenging year into an opportunity to make a difference within our company and across our communities. As Manager of Public Relations, Ashley provides strategic communications counsel as she works to amplify our new brand platform, For Todays Table, and connecting families for a better future through storytelling.
Ramadan Kareem! Muslims worldwide observe the Islamic holy month through spiritual reflection, fasting, doing good deeds, and spending time with family, friends, and community. In recognition of the holiday, our team members in Central Pennsylvania and Philadelphia donated to local mosques and Islamic community organizations, ensuring that all families celebrating can share a meal. May the spirit of Ramadan illuminate the world every day and show us all the way to peace and harmony.
When it comes to healing the planet, it takes all of us. That's why we've teamed up with Stonyfield and Non-Toxic Neighborhoods. Through Stonyfield's Play Free initiative, we're working on converting public parks and playing fields across the country to organic grounds management to ensure they are free from the use of synthetic pesticides. We kicked off our 2021 efforts yesterday in Allentown, PA, donating $25,000 to support the organic conversion at Jordan Park. We also planted trees, made beeswax candles, learned about pollinators from our friends at Rodale Institute, and colored reusable shopping totes. A special thanks to everyone who joined us in Allentown, including Mayor Ray O'Connell, Director of Parks and Recreation Karen El-Chaar, the Police Athletic League, students from Sheridan Elementary School, and our team members!
Our work to eliminate hunger in the communities we serve never stops. True to the meaning of For Todays Table, our team members donated 3,000 hams across 13 food banks, making it easier for families to share a meal around the table this Easter. But they didn't stop there. They rolled up their sleeves and got to work, spending more than 500 hours sorting food, packing meal boxes, and helping with community distributions. Thank you, team, for living our purpose and making a difference!
Wishing our favorite team, the Philadelphia Phillies, good luck as they get ready for opening day! Say it with us and say it loud: Ring The Bell!

As Womens History Month comes to a close, we’d be remiss not to recognize the many women-owned businesses we proudly work with each day to serve our communities. As a company that values diversity, equity, and inclusion in all that it does, supplier diversity is something we celebrate, and we are proud to showcase products from diverse vendors across our stores. Frieda's Specialty Produce is one of those companies. Founded in 1962 by the produce industry trailblazer Dr. Frieda Rapoport Caplan, today, the company is owned and operated by Frieda’s daughters, Karen Caplan and Jackie Caplan Wiggins; her granddaughter, Alex Berkley, leads sales. They share our passion for families, freshness, and fun. It’s a perfect pear-ing . “It’s an honor to celebrate Women’s History Month with The GIANT Company,” said Karen, who serves as president and CEO. “Frieda’s has always been about blazing new trails and with the heart of a family-owned, female-founded, and led business. Our relationship with GIANT is a long one, more than 40 years, and we are committed to inspiring, taste, and love – together.
